Gardenia flower tree

Monroeville, AL

I planted two gardenia flower trees each side of my drive way. One of them grows beautifully green
while the other one is about to die. Can anyone tell me why? or what type of soil is for it?
Your answer will greatly appreciated.

Can you post a picture of the one that's not doing well? It's next to impossible to tell you what's killing it without seeing a picture, or at the very least getting a better description of what the dying one looks like. It's possible it got some sort of insect or fungus that the other one didn't. Or if they were both planted in hot weather, it could just be that one was slightly healthier going in and was able to handle transplant shock better. Or are there differences in conditions between the two (like is one in more sun than the other, is one farther down on a slight slope, is the soil different on the two sides of the driveway, etc)?

Well, this is the second one that I planted. It's just doing the same thing as the first one;
the leaves just turned yellow and started to fall one by one. Then limb by limb started to
die. No other sign of desease beside the leaves are turned yellow. I removed the first tree that only has a few limb left to a different spot; and now it starts to turn green. Beside, both trees are very healthy when planting and both are slightly on the slope and
both receive 100% sunlight.

Anytime I've had yellowing leaves dropping off on my gardenias it's always been a watering issue, so I'd doublecheck and make sure you're not giving it too much or too little (stick your finger down a few inches into the soil and see how wet it feels). Or if you just planted it recently it could just be how gardenias react to transplant shock, summer especially in a hot climate is not a good time to plant anything, some plants will recover and survive in the long run but you're going to lose a higher percentage of plants than you would if you planted at a more appropriate time of year.
