CULINARY HERBS

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

You live in a very beautiful spot herbalbetty. I grew up in southern Ontario and have driven through that area.

Middleburgh, NY

Dahlia, next time you are in the area, stop by and we'll have a cup of tea and smell the herbs in the jeep

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Sounds good to me. If you're ever out this way in the fall we can have tea with the dug up dahlias in my livingroom, my office, the kitchen, the hall ...... I can totally relate to using all available space for the important things in life ^_^

Corte Madera, CA

ok, i must confess. i thought the "rescued" chocolate mint needed company. i ordered some friends online. 8 mint plants on their way...

and when you're visiting the sf bay area, let me know. you can go with me to my 12-step program.

(wine bar downstairs from my office here in sausalito).

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

LOL we're in pretty good/bad shape methinks.

Corte Madera, CA

ladies and gents, bergamot mint is doing fabulous. then close inspection: there are green aphids! ack. i sprayed with neem oil/soapy water. i hope it will work.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Good luck.

Corte Madera, CA

thanks! it worked and didn't show stress on the plant.

Cumberland Mtns, TN(Zone 6b)

ohmy ...holy mint-ssion impossibleI, batman. i stay away for a few days and just look at the giggles Ive missed.

Herbalbetty... I dont feel so bad now...my old taurus has beans in the back window for seed. I don't know the name (yet) but someone gave me fresh green beans with a big brown bean in it and I'm saving for next year.

My neighbor has been drying apples and I teasingly said i'd rent him a seat =)

Cumberland Mtns, TN(Zone 6b)

uhh, I asked a stooopid question (again) and I was trying to erase it before anyone saw it.

(big grin) Hi ya'll =)

nanniepb, i didn't see it =).

i divided the rescued chocolate mint and it looks really happy by my window at work. the other half will stay here at home.

today, my mint collection from blossom farm arrived:

eu de cologne (bergamot? which i already have and LOVE)
banana
grapefruit
apple
lemon
lavender
lime
pineapple

Cumberland Mtns, TN(Zone 6b)

Pretty soon we'll start calling you Mintglow =)

where is blossom farm?

Corte Madera, CA

you got it!

blossom farm is in ohio; although i found them thru local harvest.

(basilglow would work, too, except i cannot make them happy).

Cumberland Mtns, TN(Zone 6b)

I will check them out....I'm really looking for sites in my neighborhood even though it seems like the good ones are in CA
=)

I ordered wild bergamont seeds last night. wooohooo

Middleburgh, NY

nanniepb, Possum Creek Herbs is in TN. Soddy Daisy, I think. Michele and company are terrific. We ordered 500 lavender from her this year. She sells just 1-2 plants at a time too!

Cumberland Mtns, TN(Zone 6b)

Betty, I ordered from her before and I have to say I wasn't as pleased. In the end, I had 14 plants. It costed $21 to ship them less than 100 miles and she waited over a week to even send them. I'm glad you had a better experience. In fairness to her, I never complained, however I'm afraid to try a second order.

Corte Madera, CA

Do you have urges to start seeds as often as you can manage?

Do you find yourself pirouetting in a garden center or nursery when you find yourself alone in a section? Late in the evening before closing time?

Does your house look like a greenhouse during the winter months?

Have you started an herb garden in your office? (Come on, it's like the kitchen sink, except you have the computer there instead!)

Just wondering...

Have a great weekend! I can't wait to play in the dirt. I have to pot up basil, basil, and more basil!

Middleburgh, NY

Nannie, shipping is horrendous these days. Not the fault of the greenhouses, but the costs from the shipping companies and they have costs to cover with outrageous fuel prices. I bet if you checked the price that she had to pay to ship, it would be $21. You do not even want to know how much it was to ship the 500 lavender and yes, every penny I paid was the cost it actually was to ship. It hurts, but is the price to get those lovely herbs into your home.

Moonglow, if those are questions to see if I need to belong to an herbal 12 step program, the answer is yes. But, I'm not interested in the cure.

Corte Madera, CA

very true, herbal betty. there are so many nurseries just outside marin county (napa, sonoma)...but the cost of gas makes me stay home. having everything shipped saves me money; although, it's not as fun. thankfully, there are also local nurseries just a mile from church, and another on the way home from work.

LOL, me neither. in fact after this post, i'm sending out seeds to DGers. i love to spread this madness!

Cumberland Mtns, TN(Zone 6b)

Maybe my expectations were too high, but still it left a bad impression. there's always next year =)

Moonglow...it's like Spring all over again!! do you walk slowly thru the rows and look at Everything while its raining?

and time to learn about winter sowing =)

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

Moonglow, last place I worked they wouldn’t let you have living plants. I thought that was so messed up, I wasn’t really upset when they laid me off. It was good timing, it allowed me to be a house mom when my DSD needed me the most. I’m just now, two years later, seriously considering finding an outside the house job.

If you’re sending out seeds… :o)

Corte Madera, CA

nanniepb, if we're all caught on cam with our antics at garden centers...LOL. awesome americas funniest episode and we'll win $$$ to spend in the garden.

zhinu, you got d-mail.

Cumberland Mtns, TN(Zone 6b)

you go first ;)

Corte Madera, CA

in that case, "singing in the rain..."

POTTSBORO, TX(Zone 7b)

Anyone have success with Saffron Crocus in zone 8b?
If so do you have any tips?
Thanks

Corte Madera, CA

R, saffron is probably one of my favorite luxuries. I would like to know more about growing it here in the USA.

In the meantime, I have more tomatoes! But the real star is the French Tarragon I found at the local nursery. (It was not as exciting as the Chocolate Mint Rescue Operation, but it was also fun).

Cumberland Mtns, TN(Zone 6b)

ohhhh Moonglow....it looks pretty healthy to me! (the tarragon)
My tomatoes are all gone :( I should probably take down the cage/supports we made and put them away. its sad that my garden is over except for the Sunflowers.

i guess we cant grow saffron here, can we?

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

The book on North West Gardening that I have says you should be able to grow Saffron Crocus in my area; the highest zone here is 8b.

Middleburgh, NY

I live in zone 5 and have to plant my saffron in a pot and bring it in. However, I know several people in zone 6 in PA who can grow saffron in the ground outside. We lived near a village in England called Saffron Walden. Yup, the village used to be famous for its saffron.

Corte Madera, CA

is the growing season over? well, we always extend it anyhow. there is a new forum "self-contained box gardens" where i have been hanging out today. i am mostly a container gardener, and my new planters are all self-watering. i will try growing herbs in an Earth Box.

that is interesting to know (saffron walden). i learn something new everyday. really cool.

Cumberland Mtns, TN(Zone 6b)

HerbalBetty, how long did you live there? I almost took a job with the last company i worked with, but I had to agree to stay 2 yrs and my daughter found out she was pregnant. I didnt think I could stay away from my grandbabies that long.

Moonglow.....I got tarragon seeds today!!! i can try to grow it along with my new mint seeds =)~ I do a lot in containers too. I have more control since we have alot of deer and how dry it's been here.
plus, i like to rearrange my porch and sidewalks often.

We've already started having cool nights in the 50's here. the leaves are turning.

POTTSBORO, TX(Zone 7b)

I will try the S. crocus here in zone 8b this fall and report back

Middleburgh, NY

nannie, I lived in England for 4 years, from 1989-1993. We enjoyed it, but I was ready to come back to the states after that long. The people were wonderful. The history is astounding. Gardens were magnificent! I especially liked that even if someone had the tiniest space (like only a 6 x 6 front yard), they gardened intensively. And the castles with herb gardens were an especial favorite of mine. We lived in the countryside near Cambridge. I'm just realizing that was nearly 20 years ago. How did THAT happen?

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

My leaves have not only turned they're leaking all over the garden :( No f*r*o*s*t yet though. (sorry for swearing blush)

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Nannie you know that tarragon seeds will be Russian and not edible French, right?

Corte Madera, CA

uh, oh. tarragon police. lol.

russian tarragon is edible (though bitter); however, it may cause allergic reactions in some people.

Cumberland Mtns, TN(Zone 6b)

well, thats ok. between the store and home, i lost the seeds!

unless my car ate them.

this is strange......twice now I'm getting sounds and the only program I have open is DG. and they're talking about mums.

do we have DG radio????

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Just yesterday I noticed the audio ads from the headphones sitting on my desk. Glad I had the headphones plugged in so that it didn't broadcast to the whole office that I was once again indulging in my garden porn, as they call it. (They call any web surfing while you're supposed to be working ______ porn, depending on what you're looking at.)

Not a fan of the DG radio.

POTTSBORO, TX(Zone 7b)

Any one have experience with Papalo or (Papaloquelite)? Mine is growing well but no sign of seed heads yet---when does it go to seed?

Thanks

Rocky Mount, VA(Zone 7a)

~Bump~ because, this coming winter, when I am able to go through this thread thoroughly I am sure to enjoy not only what looks to be an enjoyable read but a hope that there is something to be grown that I can not kill simply by thinking about planting it for later harvest!
