yes, and I can tell that dahlianut has been into the cilantro!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

My grampa used to smoke lettuce during the depression so this trend does run in my family (snort)

Middleburgh, NY

Well, wild lettuce tincture is good for an analgesic, wonder if your grandpa knew something we didn't? I remember when I was a kid and took lettuce from the garden, sprinkled it liberally with sugar, rolled it up and ate it. I do without the sugar as an adult. :-)

Black-seeded Simpson. Still good rolled up with sugar!

Cue Mission Impossible Music. The scene: Moonglow, dressed in black knit leggings and turtleneck and mask, treads lightly in a dark home improvement parking lot. Scanning the surroundings, she quickly scales the chain link fence which separates her from her intended rescue. She inhales deeply and the wafting fragrance of chocolate mint fills her nostrils. Yes, there the poor herb resides, lonely and separated from its kind. Moonglow knows she is performing a kindness by liberating this useful herb and giving it a better home in her garden. The unsuspecting herb doesn't know about chocolate mint martinis or chocolate mint cookies...

herbalbetty's been into the herbs again!!!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

ah ninja gardening. Brings back fond memories. You go girl herbalbetty!

Corte Madera, CA

whew, quite an operation. i'm glad you all understand.

Middleburgh, NY

Honest Officer, that's catnip drying in the back of the car!!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Well at least you didn't mention dumpster diving herbalbetty. Been there/done that. Whatcha gonna do when the store heaves 'dead' herbs rather than sell them to you at a discount I ask? yupper: have kneehigh gum boots and guantlet rubber gloves, will dumpster travel ^_^ I have no shame NONE! poor little things. Now THAT'S a rescue!

Middleburgh, NY

dahlia, that's hilarious! I can just see your boots sticking out of the dumpster as you dive headlong into herbs that haven't quite met their demise yet. To bring those goodies back to life speaks of your green thumb. A friend of mine was relating a story where she and her sister were traveling some back roads and found some Joe Pye growing along a ditch. She had her sister pull over, ran out with her ever present trowel and dug up a plant. She ran back to the car, hit the side of the car with her hand and jumped in, shouting, "Go, go, GO!" You would have thought they just pulled a major bank heist. Ya gotta have your fun.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

The police pulled over once when I was harvesting rose hips and collecting red-bark willows in a drainage ditch. My poor DH was mortified. All the officer said was ' I don't think I'll tell this one to my wife or she'll want to do it too' ^_^

I've got this really lovely yellow iris that I pulled from a roadside ditch (and carried home in my luggage) much to the dismay of Ms Marta and my Scots hosts!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Great score Potagere. Ditches are mother nature's bargoon basement IMHO.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

This country probably wouldn't let you bring something like that in. I remember when I was a kid, I was taken to Puerto Rico. I made a "flute" out of a local flora, maybe bamboo, and certainly not alive. I was so sad when they took it away before I was allowed back on the plane.

Middleburgh, NY

When I was a little girl in the late 60s/early 70s, many was the timeI would accompany my Aunt to her camp in Canada. (We lived in NY state on the Canadian border.) One spring the trilliums were blooming profusely. We used to call them stink pots due to the, uh, fragrance. My aunt told me I could go gather several. So, I went to the edge of the woods and picked maybe a dozen of the beautiful flowers. We got ready to go and my Aunt told me to put them in the car and we started our journey home. We had to cross a bridge to get back into the U.S. As we approached the bridge, my Aunt said, "Quick!! Put those flowers under the seat and don't say a word." I was stunned, but did as I was told. As the customs agent was talking to my Aunt, he asked, "Any plants, fruits or vegetables?" "Nope" was the reply. My eyes must have gotten round as saucers. He waved us on through. Once safely in the U.S. again I told my Aunt that I would NEVER have brought the trilliums had I known we weren't supposed to do it. My Aunt just laughed. She thought my love of the flowers trumped any silly law about crossing international borders.

All sources say that Cumin is easy to grow. It is my favorite spice and I have never been able to grow it. Any advise?

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I've never tried it Vortreker but I've heard that it definitely benefits from GA3.

And what is GA3?
Sounds like another US anti-terrorist device.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

You slay me Potagere (snort). http://gardensnorth.com/site/index.htm

oops won't let me link the page. Go to 'About Us' then to 'Germination Corner' then to 'GA3'.
o and GA3 will kill alot of plants that have normal germination requirements so don't go godzilla with it.

Gosharooney, Wally, how did those plants get here before someone manufactured nifty consumer products to make them grow?
Beaver wants to know.

[Thanks for the info & the link, nut!]

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Silly Beaver seed lay on the ground for years til the germination conditions were perfect or their soil had natural fungii that they needed to germinate. Some seeders are not very patient.

Well, gee, Wally, I guess I'm just living in the past!
"Hey, Grampa, did you 'noculate that cuminfield with Ghirardellis?"
"What you talkin' about, fool? I ate them chocolates myself!"

Middleburgh, NY

Potagere, and you say that I must have gotten into the herbs...That's hilarious.

Hops, herbalbetty!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

yupper better get thyself back to Spokane for some fresh air PDQ mon ami cuz there's some wacky pollen floating around in France methinks.

Fresh air? Spokane?
How can those 2 concepts be linked in one meaningful sentence?
I'm gonna stick with hops, French pollen, and whatever that herb is that herbalbetty is drying in the backseat of her VW van!

(Laura) Olympia, WA(Zone 8a)

I want to try growing cumin next year, but haven't tried to do so yet.

Middleburgh, NY

Potagere, it's an old Jeep, not a VW van - however there is an old VW van for sale just down the road and I could paint it all hippie flowers and such...
Right now, I have in the jeep drying: lime balm, lemonella lemon balm, raspberry leaves, meadowsweet. My husband's car has screens of peppermint and catnip.
I'm in the northern Catskills where the air is clear, the water clean and the herbs are organic.
