Hi
I purchased a Wandering Jew (Inch Plant, Tradescantia Zebrina type I think?) as a house plant but decided to plant it in a window box in my garden! It is really doing well (I love the green & purple leaves) but I wanted to know is it likely to survive an English winter? Winters in England seem to be a lot milder than they used to be but can dip to a couple below minus! Also we tend to get snow which can last up to a week in the part of England I'm from!
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Wandering Jew & English Winter!
I wonder what cold hardiness zone your area would be. Here in zone 7 T. zebrina is not typically winter hardy especially above ground. You may want to root some stems to bring indoors for winter just in case. The most hardy species and closest looks-wise would be T. pallida (fka Setcresea pallida) which has pretty purple leaves.
Here in the south, it can be used as a ground cover. It will die back in the winter and return each spring. I'm not sure if it can survive snow though. It grows very quickly so maybe you could take some cuttings off your outside plant to winter over in the house and leave the rest outside to see if it will survive. It roots real easily in water.
It dosen't live through most winters here in southern Missouri, even in well protected areas. Like Naturelover said: take some cuttings.
I've followed the advice & taken some cuttings!
Belated Thank you!
