I have been living in the East Bay for the past 28 years and I know what works in this climate. But, Georgetown is a whole different world. The summers are hot and dry, not like our Bay Area Fog, and the winters are snow. I have just cleared out all the beds along the east side of the house, it was all one type of fern, not my favorite. I want to plant for hummingbirds and butterflies and bees. This side gets morning sun, as soon as it is over the trees and then it is shady, but very hot the rest of the day. We really want lots of color and variety. I left two plants one is a bush with two-colored leaves and dark brown branches, very pretty. The other is a hydrengea that has fabulous color but is very leggy due to the overcrowding from the ferns.
Where do I go from here?
Plants for Georgetown, CA
If you know what USDA zone you're in, I'd check out High Country Gardens website for ideas, they have lots of plants that do well in hot dry climates. The hardiness varies so make sure that whatever you get will be hardy in your zone, but I don't think you're high enough up into the mountains yet to be too cold so most of their stuff should be OK for you. Also if you've got a copy of the Sunset Western Garden book I'd look up your Sunset zone too and browse around to see what plants are listed for that zone, that can give you some ideas too. Being in afternoon shade will really help you though, you may find that you're able to grow some of the same things that you liked here because the shade will keep them from totally frying in the afternoon sun (as long as they weren't semi-tropical stuff that doesn't like winter of course!).
Thanks for the website. I will check it out.
