Squash/cucs - great plants, great flowers, NO FRUIT!!

Does anyone have any insight to this? I have yellow squash in a large pot - in the full sun, the plant is quite full, and healthy looking, with a profusion of blossoms, but absolutely no fruit is developing. The flowers open and go thru what appears to be the normal process and time frame, where they would dry up and drop off, but no fruit develops. It seems that my cucumbers which are in a new bed created this spring with organic soil, in full sun, seem as if they are doing the same thing.

Have you noticed if you have any bees around to pollinate them?

Did you check the squash to see if the flowers were male or female? Look at the stem behind the bloom. If it has a little bump where a squash is growing, it's female. If it doesn't, it's male and just for show - no fruit.

Just to add to the previous post if you do have female blossoms you may try to hand polinate them.

how do you know when you need to hand pollinate them? how do you do it?

I usually find that I need to hand pollinate my squash plants or they won't set fruit. Just take one of the male flowers and pull off all the petals so all that remains is the part in the center that has all the pollen on it. It should look like it's covered in yellow dust. Then rub it on the female flower where it sticks out in the middle.

Thanks all for your help - bees are around but not plentiful - had the same problem with squash last summer - am going to try to identify the "sexes" and hand pollinate if I can - the better news is that I have some baby cukes, and "life is good"!

I have lemon cucumbers with lots of flowers. They all look like they are female. No male. Anything wrong?
Anything I can do? I live in Medford, Oregon and it is now July 31. Should the soil stay moist?
