Garden PhotosPart 21

You want to see rust?! Look at my hawthorn. Bill - you're like me - usually too lazy to look for the tag or look it up. I am going to start using a new term to describe it - NOIDY, for no ID yet! NOID implies I have no way of knowing, which is often not the case with me. Are these coneflowers returning from last year or new?

Here Bill... a little info on rust:

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

Rust - thank you you ge and pixie - should i just get rid of the HH and plant new ones next year? i think they are still going to bloom - must be all the wet weather - did not have this issue the last few.

Sequee - you are right that's what it is! never tried them before - they looked interesting.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

thanks - i have been burning everything i cut off - lesson learned from t-plant wilt.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I don't know why but I tried to get rid of ti by yanking the plant.
Didn't work.
Seems like HH's just rusted for me. Maybe it's in the soil.
Shame they are wonderful plants.
I planted Verbascum instead.
Flowers arent as big but at least there is no rust.

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

Speaking of wilt, is anyone experiencing clematis wilt this year? Is it caused by too much rain? If not, then, what causes it?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Victor, here's a link for you.....

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Jo Ann, if not all of the HH is cleaned up in the fall, the rust will over winter in the soil waiting for the next batch of HH to arrive.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks Celeste. Mine is actually cedar-hawthorn rust. Unfortunately, the host (cedar) is about 20-25 feet away. It has gotten worse each year. I held off spraying but really have no choice now. However, the tree is pretty big so I'm not sure I can do it myself.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

That stinks! Sorry about that, thought it was your Hemlock.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Thanks for the link,it cleared up where the stuff comes from.
I didn't clean up(amature gardener) ,thats why it kept comming back. I had beautiful Black HH and just as they were blooming BAM
disgusting rust.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

WOW sorry about the Hawthorn V

victor - i bought a bunch of BS cones three years ago (8-10 kinds i think) and have continued to add to them - new this year was coconut lime which is the one above just starting. the main bed i use had matching varities on each side. i got a little lazy and left see heads on one winter for the birds to get at and now many have gone to seed.

i plan to dig them out newbies and give them away after i see what the flowers look like. not sure if they will be true to the parent. if green eye's or a few of the other are true i keep them.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

OHHHH that Black takes me back to my old garden.
Hope you get it under controle.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

Bill, your DLs look like Happy Returns and Always Afternoon. i have both of those.
i'm not even close to an expert though.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

thanks amethystsm - like victor said above - i ususally have a tag by the plant or a list/receipt saved. too much to keep up with everything else in the yard. my original plan was perennials some bushes and trees and sit back an watch. that has never happened and joining DG brought me to hyper warp. Three new kousa dogwoods arrive this week. hard stop for the year after these show up.

beni fuji, radiant rose, and moonbeam - thanks to some suggestions from RedChic

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

OH!OH! Bill
I just read your original plan to have perennials a few bushes and trees HAA Thats my plan too
Could I be in trouble?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

My original plan was just a few tomatoes and basil, like a good Italian. Ha!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

depends how much control you have over the credit card. we have separate accounts so if i get the whatever it is in the ground there is a good chance she will not notice until much later. for this last devlivery i did "warn" her - she likes dogwoods so i didn't think she'd mind - all i got was "where are you going to plant them?!

i showed he a pic of victors yard - mentioned 1/4 acre - said i'll use a shoe horn. seemed to work.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Please don't implicate me!

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

I LOVE Amaranthus. Last year I had an entire container garden, with about 8 varieties. It was stunning. I thought alot of them would reseed, as is their habit, but for some reason, only the Intense Purple came back. I wam trying to get them to grow in my jungle area, but as is life's whim - volunteers only grow where you don't want them - even if you toss a gazillion seeds out! I mean really - can you imagine tossing several hundred Morning glories seeds, alond with about twice that many poppies and amaranthus, and NOTHING came up??? LOL!

I don't share my life with anyone anymore so my finances are my own disasters.
Over the forty odd years I have been responsable for my finances I have had some close calls.
I just trained my robot brain to stop when I am close to "no end in sight" No money either.
I raised kids alone so learned where the "spend it now, deal with it later"traps are.
I must say DG'ers have tested me quite a bit since March.

All I was going to have was a veggie garden. Gardners beware !

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

Victor - you are implicated - life can be tough like that:)

Besides if I show here your yard she can always fall back on "at least he's doesn't have all the V-guy has". gaining fast though.

belleville, NJ(Zone 6a)

ah, i thought he said you were complicated, Victor.

Port Washington, NY(Zone 7a)

Thank you Celeste and Thom for the Hollyhocks offfers and the advice. Now I know to look out for rust too. Such a incredibly generous group of people here.
I have few new blooms. Here's a pink Coreopsis 'Sweet Dreams'. First year, many people say it doesn't overwinter well. I shall see.

HH and rust, the garden center I worked at...I tried looking the TV spot up and couldn't find it...The man who owned it does TV pieces for the Victory Garden...He basically said the only thing to help with HH rust is to give them plenty of ventilation, and water when they are dry...So, with all of the wet weather, no bueno. Usually it can be soil born, although in cold areas it shouldn't be able to over winter...if it is...oye. The owner used a copper based spray on the HH he had in his display gardens, it worked for a bit, but if we keep having a relatively wet summer, in MHO I don't think any sprays are going to be really and truly affective :-/

I really like all the different Echi's everyone is showing pics of...Might have to go out and add 1 or 4...lol.

Love the DLs, HH, poppies, daisies and echies that you all are showing Very nice stuff!
Victor are getting people into trouble again? LOL Fun isn't it.

Port Washington, NY(Zone 7a)

Gaillardia, not sure which one. No tag. Lucked upon a 99 cents sale at HD a few weeks ago. Walked away with 30 plants.

If you only buy one new coneflower, this one would not be a bad choice.

Great shots, Pat! I assume that was Coconut Lime? Beautiful roses. I like V. bonariensis and have to try some. I like 'see-through' plants. You can stick them almost anywhere.
Wow - what a steal, Dyane. Especially if it's O & L. How much space do you have? How are you holding up with the heat? When is the due date again?
