July Blooms: Part 2

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Be sure to come back and report all your goodies from your loved ones!
Happy happy again!

(Zone 1)

LOL Susan ... LOCK THE DOOR! Tell them no one leaves with your presents! hee hee .. yes, please tell us what you did for your birthday and what nice goodies you received! I hope you didn't have to work today! I remember my mom worked at a place for years that gave them their birthday off with pay! How nice is that? I think all companies should do the same thing!

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

Yes, Happy Birthday again Susan :)
A houseful for your special day, how nice is that!
Hope you are having a wonderful time :)

Just got home from a walk on the beach. We seem to be doing that almost daily now as it's just too hot to sit around the house.

The thermostat said 87 degrees when we left and now reads a cool 84 degrees *lol* We don't have air conditioning so every ceiling fan and window fan is running. My poor streps, no wonder they need water every single day and no wonder they aren't growing fast.......they are in survival mode *lol* They are still blooming quite happily just not growing alot. I think most growth will happen this fall early winter. Haven't even been growing them a year yet so summer care is all new to me *lol* what an experience. Needless to say, I can see some winter "projects" coming up to help improve this summer system I have as I am just running around watering every single day. Exhausting *lol* I do have a few things wicked and the things that are seem to be doing OK but I need to play around more with the wicking system as it's all new to me *lol* Just when I think I have this growing thing down, the darn weather shift dramatically and I have to try to accommodate. Do all of you go through this? I sure hope it's not just me *lol*

Well, I'm off to knit dishcloths with Jessie and watch the new show "The Secret Life of the American Teenager" with Molly Ringwald in it. Pretty good show. It started last week but deals with things I want to watch WITH miss Jessie *lol*

Hope you all have a great night!

Kim

(Zone 1)

Kim, that sounds so nice ... a walk on the beach! We used to do that a lot years ago and I think it's something we need to start doing again! Nothing more relaxing than an early morning or early evening walk along the sand, listening to the waves roll in! We are only a couple of miles from the beach ... really should do it more often! Next time you go I hope you will take your camera along and take some pictures for us! I would love to see some Maine scenery! That's a good idea for a thread somewhere in these forums: "Scenery from where I live". I know I love looking at all the bloom photo's but I also love seeing scenery from other areas of the country! I just loved Brenda's photo's during the winter of the beautiful snow scenes!

Our anniversary is coming up in a few weeks and hubby was saying we should take off and go somewhere for overnight or maybe two days. He suggested Atlantis at Paradise Island in the Bahamas! I laughed so hard! I told him that would be too expensive. He began to check it out on the computer and came in this evening and said the cheapest room at the Atlantis is $600 per night! LOL, I don't think we are going to the Bahamas. He said something about Disney and I laughed again ... I told him the price of a one day ticket for an adult at the theme parks now is @ $68! And, the hotels at the parks are expensive too. Years ago we could get special Florida resident rates at both the hotels at Disney and entrance to the park. We stayed a couple of times at the Contemporary Hotel - the oldest one at Disney and the monorail runs right through the lobby and you can get on/off right there and walk to your room! I think we may end up going up to St. Augustine for a couple of days, we haven't been there in awhile and it's a neat city.

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

I love walking on the beach and miss it dearly!!!!
Oh how I miss New England weather..I would take 84 degress anyday! Thats fall weather here in AL.LOL.

(Zone 1)

I hear ya Jan ... 84 doesn't sound so bad! We've been up in the low 90's and so humid! I can't imagine not having air conditioning when the temp's are in the mid 80's ... Kim, how do you stand it? We have central air and heat and the air is on 24/7 almost 365 days a year. We sleep with a ceiling fan on high and I sometimes get the little fan and put it by my side of the bed blowing right in my face.

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

Same here Lin,This year seems to be more humid than past few years.Or maybe it;s just me..This mornings weather had the humity at 71 per cent and it was only 7 o'clock in the morning.and just kept climbing all day. That makes it so hard to get anything done outside..Good thing I have a kiddle pool 3 feet tall and 8 feet across to cool off in.LOL.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I love it that you have a kiddie pool! That is funny , Jan...........I can just see you lounging out in the yard in your own private pool. (LOL)

(Zone 1)

I agree, it seems like the weather has really been changing and getting hotter and more humid if that's possible! Morning is my favorite time of day and I hate it when you can't even walk outside at 7 a.m. without the air feeling like you could cut it with a knife. I love to sit out by the pool with my morning coffee, tea or diet coke and it's not possible this time of year!

I love kiddie pools! That's my style! I prefer shallow water! I almost drowned when I was young and have had a fear of water ever since. I am not a strong swimmer at all and panic if I am over my head. Really scares me! We have a boat and go out on occasion but I have to know exactly where the life jackets are! I won't go out in the ocean on the boat.

South, TX

Lin you sound like me. My house is always cool, AC on all year. Except on cold days, ha. Not too many of those. We almost never need the heater. Maybe for 10 mins. some mornings.

I love the ceiling fans to run also, unless my little bird is out. I love the ceiling fan at night.

The violets, streps and episcia, etc. do fine, they always like it cool. Spoiled like ME!

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

Yup I have a little kiddie pool and let me tell you it a lifesaver for me.I think I'm in that thing 6-7 times a day when I'm puttering around outside Most of my clothes are bleached from neck down from the chlorine.Good thing I live in the woods where know one can see me.LOL.

(Zone 1)

My husband and I are so different. He seems to be the one who gets cold easily anymore. The older I get the more I hate the heat. We have a programmable thermostat and it stays set at 75 year round. That's find during the day but I would prefer about 50 degrees for sleeping! LOL. I keep saying I'm ready to move to the far north but I know I wouldn't like those long winters with snow and ice!

(Zone 1)

Jan: I would love to live in the country with no neighbors! But, I am spoiled too and don't like to drive more than a couple of miles to get to the grocery store or mall etc! ^_^

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

Lin.It was a hard ajustment for me when I moved here.I was used to city living. Now it's 10 miles one one to the grocery store,140 miles round trip to go to the heart doctor and big city shopping.LOL.

(Zone 1)

OMG ... 140 miles round trip to the doctor?! How in the world do you do it? I can't imagine driving 10 miles to get groceries .. I'm afraid we wouldn't have food in the house half the time. Or, I'd have to have a big veggie garden and fruit trees! I am so spoiled by living in the city. I haven't driven on the interstate in many years and I like having everything within a couple of miles.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Lin, I have to have someone drive me for my dental surgery almost 3 hours to San Antonio and then back home that night.

When the kids were coming in for July 4th weekend, I have to drive 24 miles to the grocery store (unless you want to use Super S........very small town chain of grocery stores and I wouldn't eat any meat they offer). They don't even carry granola, etc.

I can drive the interstates blindfolded (not really) but , if you don't drive the interstates in Texas, you aren't going anywhere more than 5 miles from home.

Lilburn, GA

Sallyblooms, what little bird do you have?

(Zone 1)

Gail, my dentist is about 1 1/2 miles from where I live ... I probably wouldn't have any teeth if I had to drive 3 hours for an appointment! And 24 miles to go grocery shopping?!*&%% Oh my, I guess I would not do well living in the country after all!

I remember when we drove through Texas back in 1969 and the wide open spaces. Nice in one respect but an inconvenience in another. I loved the trip across the state of Texas, all the nice scenery but man, on the way back I thought we'd never get out of Texas! That is one HUGE state!

... and I love cowboys!

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

You are too funny, Lin! I can remember back in the late 70's when all my close friends and I would head for the cool weather in Cloudcroft, NM for the summer with all our kids. We would caravan across west Texas. It would take us over 12 hours just to get to El Paso and finally out of Texas.

When you do live here, you think not much about it as a way of life. I can grocery shop in Portland but the choices are terrible and that is a 25 minute drive, so very little difference in time.

There are no periodontists in Corpus Christi who have even been trained in IV sedation. I double checked that one out! Much to my dismay, it is either San Antonio or Houston or Austin............both even further away in miles and time.

South, TX

I am the same way. I love to be close to everything. When I had my surgery I was very close to our home. My doctors are close too. Vet too, that is really important to me.

Fred's parents have a ranch and they have land in several places. We visit all of those places, but I would not want to be there all the time. It is nice to visit, but the snakes etc. are not what I want when I garden in my flower beds.

Spider, I have a Parrotlet named Chipper.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

I kill rattlesnakes when I find them (LOL). I really do and I am not afraid of anything out here in the middle of nowhere.

Lubbock, TX(Zone 7a)

WOW- I just can't keep up with you ladies any more! I miss a couple days and have to read more than 1 thread to catch up!
Lin- you're pool is amazing! And I also love your plants in glass collection!

Kim- I love your Mother-In -Law plant bloom. I see why you chose it to hybridize.

Susan- Charlotte strep is beautiful and made me think of my fave g-mother. That was her name. And it was soft and pink just like a flower reminding me of her should be.

So much more I wanted to comment on but I would have to re-read the last 2 threads to remember what they were! LOL

(Zone 1)

Sally: I don't live in the city but we still have snakes! I am scared to death of them too! My elderly backyard neighbor called a few days ago and said she had a coral snake (very poisonous) in her garage. She thought it was so pretty and colorful and then remembered that I had told her about the coloration difference from that and the king snake. She screamed and another neighbor came over and killed it with a shovel. We had two of those in our yard last year! And my next door neighbors have killed pygmy rattlesnakes in their yard! One neighbor shot and killed a 7' diamondback rattlesnake a few years ago! I've seen black snakes and they scare me but at least I know they aren't deadly! After having two coral snakes in the yard I try to be very, very, careful when weeding and gardening. I look forward to a few years down the road when my DH retires and we sell this house ... I'm ready for a condo, preferably not ground floor, LOL.

Hi ya Diane ... we've missed you!

South, TX

Too bad, Lin! That isn't good when your hands are in the plants!

Lilburn, GA

Sallyblooms,

Awwww, i love parrotlets. Can yours speak?

I have a white cap parrot and a lovebird that I hand fed and also have a sun conure and a cinnamon conure.

Two Christmas ago i found a little finch that was a reject from a pet shop because of his defective beak so I also have him and his little companion that I bought to keep him company.

Noe, my next plans are a parrotlet and a canary.

(Zone 1)

Yeah, it was just on the news today about a man down in South Florida who was in Wal-Mart Garden Center and went to pick up a plant and was bitten by a pygmy rattler! It has happened so many times over the past few years. Seems like I'm hearing about a snake bite at a garden center at least once every year anymore! They say the snakes come in the plants from the nursery, hiding in the pots! Believe me, it is scary! I would probably have a heart attack if I got bitten by a snake while looking at plants in a garden center or nursery! There are 45 species of snakes found in Florida, 6 of them venemous: Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake, Timber Rattlesnake, Pygmy Rattlesnake, Cottonmouth, Copperhead and Coral Snake! %%%Q@@&&& Gives me the creeps just thinking about them! Scary!

I better think about something else, go read or watch t.v. or I know I will be dreaming about snakes again! After my neighbor showed me the dead coral snake that was in her garage I dreamt about snakes all night! Coral Snakes and Diamondback Rattlesnakes - someone had recently told me about finding a rattlesnake in their yard too!

Gotta go read awhile ... bye.

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Many many years ago when I lived in Houston, we had a wooded lot. My oldest child was 3 years old at the time and she brought me over to look at what she had found. It was a giant coral snake. Didn't take me but less than 5 minutes to kill that one with a hoe.

We have had in the Corpus Christi area this summer several children being bitten by Diamond Head rattle snakes. I think snakes are everywhere they want to be (LOL)

(Zone 1)

I think we need a new thread ... this one has gotten to 148 replies/posts. If someone has a pretty gessie pic, how about a new July Blooms Part 3?

Northeast, NE(Zone 5a)

ooo all this talk about snakes makes me afraid to go out and work in the garden today...I don't know what I would do if I came across a poisonous snake..gives me the willies just thinking about it..lol..thankfully in our immediate area all we have are the garden snakes..just eat bugs in the garden..a welcome friend..ooo I would NOT like to come across anything worse! hey Jan that baby pool is an excellent idea..

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)

Wow you ladies partied all night long *lol*
I can't even imagine having snakes! I HATE them so bad.
Or imagine taranchula's? OMG my skin is crawling.
I have seen some of the bugs in Florida.........they are amazing.
When we went to Disney there was an "alligator bug" dead in the pool. That think looked like it could eat a small child *lol*

Lin, you are more than welcome to come to Maine for a mini vacation :) You can stay with us :) We can all go and eat some lobsta and walk on the ocean :)

It is already in the 80's this morning and it's only 8:20. Going to be another hot and humid one. Chance of thunderstorms so that would be nice but maybe after our walk tonight so that it cools down for sleeping.

Hope you all have a wonderful day!

Kim

Taft, TX(Zone 9a)

Kim, I don't know how to tell people we started a new thread.........the hyperlink thing...........

Kennebunk, ME(Zone 5a)
