Susan those are really pretty streps. I like all of the flowers.
July Blooms: Part 2
New to the group. Used to grow AV for show.
Susan, you can use cheap, should be heavy synthetic fiber blankets. Just cut them to the size of the tray. Pour your water in. Pot you plants with a piece of nylon stocking sticking out through one of the holes on the bottom of the pot and set the plant right onto your wet blanket. Cappilary action sets in. Helene
Welcome Helene..great to have you here with us..hope to see you post some of your plants..always Love admiring everyones plants : ) Again..Welcome!!
I started out with acrylic blanket material I bought by the yard from Walmart. Although I am now using capillary matting from Cape Cod, it is still the same thing and the same principles involved. I do have better luck when I wick the plants on the matting.
I love the name HelenetheQueen! Did you give yourself that name or your children? Too cute!
We lost our electricity until now when a big storm came through. We have been blessed with 6 inches at least.......probably more and rain is forecast through Thursday.
I get excited about plants starting to bloom and don't wait long enough to take a picture.
Brenda gets the thanks for sending me the leaf of Silverglade Oyster.
Lovely plants, Gail! LOVE that frilly pink and the Saddle Shoes is lovely.
Forgot that you, Sally, love that variegated foliage and frilly pink blooms, too!
Thanks for the info about the blankets... They sure are some pretty AV's you all are growing...Thanks Brenda for the name of that plant and also Nancy sent me the Texas Hot Chili awhile back... Lin you are so good at finding names of things so fast... You go girl... :-) Brenda, Lin is right it is Rhiannon... I now have so many favorites now its hard to keep track...LOL Brenda, your Emily and Charlotte is beautiful.
Do you have allot of episcia's Spider? I have a few that have stolens and it would not be until at least next week I could mail you some so if you want a few let me know ok?
Well I am going to get ready for bed as I work in the morning.. I hope you all have a good night and see you all tomorrow after work...
Susan
Oh my goodness Gail, I love the color of that Wrangler's Green Pasture! Yep, love pink ... and that pink bloom with green edges is so very pretty!
I really love that one called Silverglade Oyster too ... beautiful ruffly foliage and lovely flower!
Hey Gail, I thought you weren't growing AV's anymore? Or was that somebody else? I have gotten away from them, only have a couple left.
Kim/Kimskreations: YOU, my friend should change your username to Plantladykim! Really, I'm serious ... that name fits you! You are THE plant lady! If you don't like that one, how about Kimberblooms, or Kimberlyblooms, or Kimblooms?
Hey, listen to me giving you a new name! I like Gertrude too ^_^ but it doesn't fit!
Helenethequeen: Welcome! You will love this forum ... the sweetest, friendliest folks in the garden for sure! We have a blast here! Please join in! And, we'd love to see pictures of some of your plants too!
Hey ya Susan & Cedarnest! We've missed you gal's! Susan, you are really getting into growing those Strep's I see! What a great job too ... beautiful plants! We might just have to change your user name to SusansStreps!
Well, I guess I am gonna get off this computer. I'm yawning my head off here! It's early for me too ... I'm usually up until midnight or 1:00. I don't think I'm going to make it that late tonight.
Hope everyone has a good night ... see y'all tomorrow!
Lin
I still haven't passed 'permanent judgment' on african violets! Just as I was giving up completely on ever making them look good, a few are bouncing back so they get to sit on the shelves until they look ugly again.
Kim, you know Lin gave me my name and I have loved it. Let's see which name I vote for.........ummmmm. I like Kimberblooms the best! All you have to do is change it with administration and then all your old posts and thread just go with your new name!
Susan, it sounds like it may be getting time for you a good growing name as you have tamed those wild streps for sure!
Good night, sleep tight!
gail
Hey Lin,
I am getting ready for bed and I just had to stop and read one more time...LOL We had a hectic end of June and the beginning of July... Youngest son Mike is moving at the end of July and starts his new job Aug. 4th... So we have been kinda busy... I will always be grateful you sent me some of my first AV"S... :-) Then to think I just came here to play Bingo...LOLOL I love growing the streps and so far so good... You know I started with the Plumerias and I still love them but they are a little heavy to carry in each winter then I started passion flowers and those also I have to bring in for the winter and they get spider mites in the house really bad... Then I put them outside and they croak... So I still have my Plumerias but I think I found my plant .... Streps don't have to be put out or taken in at winter time... Also I like trying to root them and grow that way... Hey way more then you asked for huh? Sorry about the book... I really have missed all of you also... It is funny how fast we miss this forum... At least for me it is... How are your Plumeria's doing Lin? Hope good...
Ok this time I am going to bed...LOL Have a good night ladies...
You know I really do hate my sign in name so maybe I will change it... I am no longer 51 either... LOL Going to bed now... Thanks,
Susan
Wow, so much to catch up on this morning.
I wasn't able to play on the computer last night like I was hoping to. Hubby was out of town for the night and my daughter decided it was a good night to show her "I'm a teenager" side. Needless to say, it started out very heated but ended up with a nice mother/daughter trip to the ocean (funny how mother nature and the ocean have a way of easing the tension and soothing the soul). After all that, I was just too tuckered to attempt to log on. I put a couple of rows on my dishcloth (which is now my cigarette *lol*) and fell asleep. FINALLY got my first 8 hour night of sleep since I quit smoking! Feel rested this morning.
Helene, welcome! You are just going to love it here! I found these ladies last October (not quite a year ago) and have called this forum "home" since. I hardly check any of the other forums anymore *lol* Once in a while I do but very rarely. Since finding this forum, my hoya collection is down to 2 *lol* and my gessie collection is up to over 100 I think *lol* I have really fallen hard for gessies but more than that, I have really fallen for the friendships here :) Welcome again :)
Peek a Boo I see you Nancy..........*lol* So nice to see you and Susan finding a minute or two to post :) I know both of you are so busy right now but it's nice to see you as you are missed. Speaking of missing people........Keyring, Raingazer, JanetS, VA_Wild_Rose where are you? You are all missed big time!
When I first signed up and was KimsKreations it was because I always wanted to open a greenhouse and also sell my hand made items (KimsKreations). But now I have been thinking that since that is never going to happen *lol* that KimsKreations could be my name on the hybrid crosses I make *lol* I was thinking names like "KK Dignity" or "KK Reflections" or "KK Astounding" as names for crosses *lol* I think I would shorten it to KK but my friends would always know what the KK stands for :) Kind of like the "Bristol's" line or the "Neil's" line. What do you all think? I have also used the name KimsKountry on some websites as I used to have a fairy website with my garden photographs on it and named that website KimsKountry.
So, here is a new baby for me. I can't take credit for the bloom as it came with it from Lyndon Lyons. This is called Nematanthus Albus (also known as Nematanthus Santa Theresa). I think it is such a pretty Nematanthus. I hope to use it in hybridizing someday :)
Bonnie & everyone whose interested *lol*...........guess what? My first sinningia cross looks like it was a success! I can't believe it!
I crossed Ozark Rosy Cheeks with Mother's Day and then did a back cross. The back cross didn't take which doesn't surprise me as I think I might have squeezed the stigma when I applied the pollen but Ozark Rosy Cheeks looks pregnant for sure!
This cross was done on 6/30 and here is the maturing pod. Bonnie.......what do you think? Should I get excited?
Oh my goodness Miss Kim! Wow! That Nematanthus alba is one gorgeous plant! I had no idea they got flowers that look like that ... I thought they were all like the guppy plant! That is beautiful and the flower sure does resemble a foxglove!
You sure can grow em! I am keeping my fingers crossed for your sinningia cross! LOL. Both mama and papa are awesome looking plants so those babies have to be just as nice. Can't wait to hear you hollering that you got seeds from that pod!
You definitely need to keep the "KK" name, especially for your crosses! And ... since you are so very creative with your growing of all kinds of plants, knitting etc ... your name Kimskreations fits perfectly!
Susan: I was just kidding around when I talked about you and Kim changing your usernames! I am not good at thinking up names. I did suggest Gail's username last year because she was really getting into the gessie's but I am not good at even naming our pets! I can't ever think up cute names for them! Over the years we've had dogs & cats with names like Jason, Charlie, Blackie, Lucky, Sassy. I met someone years ago who had a dog they named Cucumber! And my sister had a friend who had dogs they named One Potato, Two Potato and Sweet Potato! I never would have thought to name a pet after a vegetable but I think it's so cute and very unique!
I am nowhere good at growing any plants as some of y'all are, my user name of plantlady came from my sister calling me that just because I have so many different plants. Lin is just short for Linda. My husband has always called me Lin as well as one of my sisters and a couple of our friends. I used to bake cookies (lots and lots of cookies) for my husbands students and the basketball players and cheerleaders and folks at the college where hubby teaches. I became known as "cookielady" around the school years ago and I don't bake a lot anymore but am still called the cookie lady! So, for awhile cookielady was my password on some websites.
Well, I still haven't gotten out of here to run errands yet! I was ready to leave an hour ago ... better get going!
Oh, someone else I've missed on this forum: Critterologist! Where are you Critter?
Have a great day everyone!

Its Blooming and I am in Love..Thanks for sharing a cutting with me..I had No idea blooms could be this big and beautiful while the plant remains a managable size..I am really getting serious about sinningias now..LOL..wow!!
Gee, what a wonderful way to start the day! So many many fabulous blooms. Thanks everyone!
Hi everyone.I've missed the party here again.LOL.Great pictures, So many beautiful blooming plants.
Nancy finally I get to see the diego pink bloom! Thanks for posting a picture. It's pretty. My plant got buds and then they just disappeared.I wonder if sinningia get bud blast? From what I understand, growing a sinningia leaf most of the time they grow tubers but never put out green growth(blind tuber) I guess I just got lucky with the 2 leaves I grew. Please someone correct me if I'm wrong,I'm still learning.
The seed grown sinningia thats 2 1/2 years old opened up yesterday. And the cutting from it that I put in the ground has buds too.
Have a good day everyone.Jan
AWWWW Nancy, BEAUTIFUL my friend! That Azur really is a striking beauty :) and your Sinnigia is beautiful too! Congratulations on rooting the cutting! I haven't been able to root one yet, they have just rotted. I'm having a wicked hard time rooting things right now, I do better in the fall/winter with rooting for some reason *lol*
Yeah, TRYING to cross sinningia now Nancy *lol* ANY 2 flowers that are blooming at the same time in my house and I have my tweezers, pencil, labels and scissors out *lol* I enjoy the blooms for a couple of days and them........bang.........there go their "private parts" *lol* This morning I tried crossing the 2 chirita that I posted above *lol* It's addicting I tell ya! Now when a flower blooms, it's not the flower that catches my eye, it's how big the pollen sac is *lol* I want us to have as many seeds to play with this fall/winter as we can :) The fresher the seed, the better the germination rate. These crosses I'm doing right now (streps) won't be ready until October/November so it's really imperative to get as many in as I can. Humidity also helps with success rate and it's been quite humid here so now is the time :)
Oh Bonnie, I'm SO happy to hear that there may be a pregnancy :) I had selfed 2 flowers on Mother's Day and both of those took but this was the first actual cross between 2 different ones so I'm VERY excited. The anticipation is just going to kill me *lol* Bonnie, could you be thinking of Mother of Pearl? That one looks like a tube to me too *lol* Bonnie, would you like some seeds from my Mother's Day x self to start once they ripen? They have another couple of weeks before they are ready though.
Speaking of which, I harvested some Chirita Tamiana seeds this morning if anyone would like to try some just feel free to let me know :) I harvest 2 pods and these were pods that I pollinated by hand so there should be some good germination *fingers crossed*. I'm going to start a few to be sure the germinate too :)
Lin, after so many years of being KimsKreations, I think it would be really strange to be anything else but *lol* Sometimes I just daydream and have been considering the "what if" any of these crosses EVER produced something unique. Chances are I would NEVER register anything as there is just so much that goes along with it but IF I did, I think "KK Miracle" or something like that looks good *lol* What a dreamer *lol*
Kim
Kim ... not a dreamer at all ... it WILL happen! Those of you who love the science of it all and take the time to get the tweezers, scissors etc to collect that pollen and those seeds ... y'all have the patience of a saint. I, on the other hand have very little patience! Just can't imagine going through all that! But, I sure admire those of you who do! I picture you in white lab coats, gloves, with a huge magnifying glass in hand just sneaking around those plant stands in search for that bloom with pollen or a seed pod or two. ^_^ Kim, I think your very first registered plant should be "KK Miracle", and then you can go with "KK Reflection", "KK Astounding" etc. but that very first one must be miracle. And, I don't mean that it would be a miracle for you to get babies from your crosses ... I mean that newly hybridized plants are such little miracles!
Jannich, you certainly have a lot of patience to wait 2/12 years for a plant to bloom. Good for you!!!!!!!!!!!
Congratulations on your 'pregnancy', Kim! (LOL)
Hey Kim;
Have you looked at dollyyeh's web site? they have some sinns to die for, not to mention everything else they grow, but if you look at some of the mothers day pictures they have on there you will see what i mean, not all look like yours, just some & i really can't figure out why.i would love seed from your p[lant as i like the way yours look. let me know if there is anything of mine you would like.mrsbonnie just type in dollyyeh in your search engine & it should come up.
mrsbonnie
LOL.Gail,I do have alot of patience, but I've told that plant 'bloom dam ya" many many times.hee,hee.
I LOVE Dolly's site Bonnie.
I just checked out all the pictures of "Mother's Day" and I THINK (I could be wrong) that all of the pictures on that site are seedlings of Mother's Day x Self. I only saw one that was a tube shape and it looked like it hadn't fully opened yet when the picture was taken. All the other pictures looked like Mother's Day but with all different markings. Some of them I thought were really beautiful :)
Are you sure that you are not looking at Mother of Pearl? Every picture I've seen of that one looks like a tube and really doesn't do anything for me either *lol*
You are more than welcome to some Mother's Day seeds :) Would you like some of the Mother's Day x Ozark Rosy Cheeks (should throw even more genetics into the mix *lol*) when those are ready? Just let me know :)
Kim
Hi All,
Have a house full for my birthday as I am typing so will try to get back later... Wow what beautiful flowers everyone is posting.... Nancy she is beautiful... I am happy to say the one with the roots lived on mine and she is getting buds again.... Good job ... Ok have to get off or they will leave with my presents...LOL
Hugs,
Susan
