The P & L DAILY CHAT THREAD #1 - Anything goes!!!

Oh boy, more hanging buckets from the sound of it! Catscan...you said it all there.....tweaking, tweaking, and more tweaking! The second you think you have it figured out, they change it up on you just enough to say....nuh uh you don't....plan on another angle. One thing for sure, when dealing broody's I think it can be done in so many certain ways....but they don't seem to be listening to the directions for how it is done!! lol The only thing for sure predictable is that they are unpredictable. Keeps it interesting though!

Kewl beans there Tam, I might pick some up from ya when I come over. I am trading some of these funky crested she wants they are white and black speckled with a Mohawk doo. She called by some weird name. She wants all the roo's I have of them. I am with ya there kill them dogs. Sorry but that is my frame of mind. When you mess with me or mine, be ready for a bullet or a club.

you said it. no, not mortal wounds as far as i could tell. like i said, i aimed for their big butts, not their heads. but both dropped their breakfast... as far as i know only one dog got away with a meal, but don't know who it was yet...

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

the problem with some stray pack with no apparent collar or tags coming and making a kill, is once they get a taste they keep coming back EVERY DAY... and blieve me, these guys didn't look uncared for or hungry, i am sure when someone gets home and see their dogs injured they will be calling the sheriff, thereby telling on themselves... it will all work out... now to figure out where to put these extra bantams LOL...

We were typing at the same time tf. I am so sorry about you losing even more chicks and chickens today. Oh, it seems like there must be something awful in the air....it seems like a handful of us are losing animals for one reason or another. We just had the cornish die 2-3 days ago, the yesterday morning one of the pearl keets flew out of the pen and was killed by one of our newer dogs, then later in the morning a one of our two bantam roo chicks fell over (he has been fighting a cold), then I went to water the roosters yesterday afternoon and found 2 dead, probably from the heat. It is just so awful. Sometimes it seems like for every step you take forward, you take two back. My DH just shook his head and said HE was setting up another BUCKET for the roos. They were 2 weeks away from butchering. I just hope we don't have any more losses....we have a lot of 'left overs' from butchering and don't need any good birds to feed the bucket. (sigh) : (

2 of my chicks got out the other day and I went out there in shock. The dogs were laying around them chicks not even looking at them. They know I will beat the living you know what out of them. The chicks were like dang how did I do that. I want back in. i lost 3 bantams last night, my fault, I forgot to turn on the light or cover them up. I may have hubby open up the end of the skirting so they can all have the whole area, since the bantams seem to think they need to go to the other side.

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

dang it Christy I am sorry for you and tam loosing your flock for no reason. Due to weather or other critters. Mine is stupidity :)

Novinger, MO(Zone 5b)

We cross posted again! Lordy I hope things settle down there soon.....and not too many cops showing up. I know what you mean about the dogs getting a taste for it and coming back again and again. Just like a varmit or owls. Once they get a taste they will come back and wipe you out and won't stop unless you wipe them out. I think it would be foolish for the owners of the dogs to call the cops.....it is their job to keep their dogs contained and not roaming around so is their fault that their dogs got out. Of coarse, as we all know, people do foolish things all the time. So, where are you going to put the extra bantams?

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

I am just in tears now. Went out to feed the 3 remaining puppies( we gave away 3) and I couldnt find my lil thelma girl, she got into the fishless pond and drowned. It had to be when she tried to follow me out to the garden this morning. There is not possible way she could have gotten in there it is to high for her to climb. I guess i need to get out my little white plastic pickett fence things and make them a yard, so they cant get out.

Oh Dear! Everyone is having such a bad time. I just left my three 11 week old crowing roos at the livestock auction--they were so beautiful compared to the other scruffy poultry there--there was a white turkey that appeared to be dying. They did have a health technician trying to keep track of everything and everyone was very nice, but I really don't ever want to do that again. I am going to work harder at placing the roos before they crow--I just don't want to lose any pullets so, I wait too long.

On a happier note--there were the most beautiful pea fowl there. They had them wrapped it white linen coats--a little like strait jackets--to protect their feathers. They even had mated pairs as well as individual cocks and hens.

Oh Tia, I am so sorry hon....you pour thing! I swear critters will always find a way to get into trouble that we can't even predict. Again, I am sorry.

Catscan...I know what you mean about there being scruffy looking poulty....or other animals. I always wonder what kind of a life they have led when I see them. In some cases, they are just a little dirty but it is not hard to look at the over all condition to see if this is an animal that has been taken care of or neglected. I always feel so bad for the neglected looking ones and wonder what kind of people would not only do that to an animal but then bring it to a sale for everyone to see. They shouldn't have animals if they are not going to take care of them.
I bet you were so proud of how nice your roos looked, huh? I think that by going to an auction where you can see so many different animals and there condition, it really acts as a type of gauge as to how well you are taking care of yours. I know it does for us. I hope your roos bring good money. I think ours brought as much as they did because they looked so nice looking and healthy. In this area, they don't go for a ton of money, but ours still brought twice what I have ever seen them go for there and that is a great feeling. We also found out that they were going to be the new owners breeding roosters, so they should be very happy for awhile!

TamaraFay, are you chickens fenced?? We had a stray dog break into our fenced chicken yard several years ago and it was awful. A couple of months ago, a friend had her small dogs killed by dogs, listed by the county, as being dangerous. She filed charges and the owners, were given jail time if they did not turn in the dogs, and pay a hefty fine and they had to pay the people the price of the two dogs - of course money was little consolidation for the loss of their precious pets. But, of course, the point is that some areas will help with this sort of thing, and I'm happy my state does. I'm so sorry it happened to your chicks!!! Good luck!
