oak leaf hydrangea-sick?

Winston Salem, NC(Zone 7b)

We're moved in to our place here a little over a year ago. There is an oak leaf hydrangea in the front yard- it is big (maybe 8' x8'), and looks healthy overall, but the base looks like this (pic attached). Can anyone tell me if this is normal or if this is some kind of fungus or other sickness? I love the shrub and would hate to lose it.

It looks like it may have crown gall--which is caused by a bacterium. The long-term prognosis for a plant with crown gall is not good. I would advise taking photos to an experienced nursery professional or perhaps sending a sample to N.C.S.U.'s Plant Disease and Insect Clinic for a definitive identification.

Thank you!! I hope it can be rescued.
