WARNING: COULD BE THE DUMBEST QUESTION EVER!!!!!!!!
If I pick the annual sunflower blossoms, will the plant bloom again, or have I killed it? Does the same hold true w/ giants as well as the "knee high" varieties?
Picking Sunfowers
Not a dumb question at all.
If you are growing the giant mammoth sunflowers and cut the flower head off, that's probably the end of the plant. I've never saved the remnant of the plant to see what happens.
If you are growing the branching sunflowers, that have multiple stems with several flowers per stem, they'll probably continue to sprout new smaller ones...but i may be wrong...I've never grown the branching ones.
It's early for anything to branch; I'm just getting a few flowers on "Bashful" now. If I see the potential for any branching, I guess it's OK to cut a blossom; it may encourage better branching (it does w/ dahlias).
I'm primarily a shade gardener. Last year I took a few trees down which gives me about 4 square inches of full sun ;0) I packed that little space with as many diff. sunflowers as I could fit. I always have admired the local farms' buckets of sunflower blooms for sale in late summer; I want a few of my own!
