Trumpet plant/tree?

Brampton, Canada

I bought a trumpet plant that actually looks like a tree from a neighbour's plant sale. We brought in the pot for the winter and watered once a month and transplanted to the garden this summer. It looks healthy and has grown taller and has big leaves but no sign of flowers. How long does it take for blooms? I have fed it and make sure it gets moisture.

How much sun is it getting?

I'm not sure I even know what plant you're talking about--do you by any chance have a Latin name for it? My first thought was Campsis/trumpet vine since that's the only "trumpet" thing I could think of that would be hardy in your zone. But it doesn't have big leaves and it's definitely a vine not a tree so it doesn't fit your description. Then I thought of Brugmansia which is called Angel Trumpet, it does fit the description of treelike and big leaves, but it will not be hardy for you so if that's it I'd dig it up and pot it since you're going to have to bring it in every winter. If it's a Brugmansia I know they are heavy feeders so it'll need to be fertilized regularly as well as watered regularly. Many things will also take a year off from blooming when you plant them--they take their time developing their roots first before they spend any time flowering.

This is a of pic of my friend's Angel Trumpet Tree. She lives in Illinois. This thing is stunning! The blooms are the size of a dinner plate!!

Hi Ecrane 3, it is a Brugmansia just as you said. I asked at a garden centre today and was told to use a phosphate fertilizer to encourage blooms. And yes, Shekhina, the blooms are stunning!!! You could grow an orchard of these in Florida.

I had several brugs while living in Florida and they went through definite bloom cycles. They are extremely heavy feeders, too, so just keep feeding, watering, and be patient.
