Harvesting corn

Independence, MO

Thanks for the help with tomatoes--I'm a brand-new gardener--have only done herbs in containers before. Now I have a big yard & rally want to get into gardening!

I have 6 Peaches & Cream corn plants which are about 4 feet tall and have 1-2 ears each. When do I pick the corn? I've heard when the tassels start to turn brown--is that right? Also, why are my stalks so short? Someone said they thought there were varieties that were bred to be shorter than the 6' stalks I remember from my mother's garden.

Thanks for the help!

The silks turn brownish not the tassels. actually you can peek in the ear carefully as the ends of silks dry. Each cultivar is a little different some, the silks completely dry, others are ready when they are dry about halfway. You will be an expert at determining when yours is ready after you pull a a few ears. There are two varieties named Peaches and Cream, one is a short early corn and the other a more normal size midseason bi-color. Most modern cultivars are shorter, than the old open pollinated types although there are some late season cultivars that will go 6-7 feet.
