how exactly does corn do its thing in the ear? ive been feeling my corn up lately and it feels like theres only a half an ear in there. i didnt want to open any early and i did to see if it was some kind of pest. no pests, no nastiness, but it looked strange and only half of the ear was developed. is this normal? when do i pick this stuff anyways?

Typically sweet corn is picked when the silks get about half dry. It does fill from the stalk end. Stress, drought, poor nutrients etc, can lead to short ears. Incomplete pllination results in spaces between grains. Most likely you just need to be patient. when the longest silks began to dry, you can carefully peak into the end of the ear to judge, whether it has matured to your liking.
