Asking for permission....

Granite City, IL(Zone 6a)

(I forgot to mention when posting my question that if I ever actually DO sell any art I make with your photos (with your permission) that I’d be happy to send you a free high res. copy of that art for you to keep. You only need to let me know you’d want me to do that.) ;o)

Hello all,

I’m fairly new to DG’s and am really enjoying the time I spend here. It’s really a lot of fun and very informative too! One of my other hobbies besides gardening is digital art. I love taking a really good photos (high res) and working with it in my various digital software programs, turning them into ‘art’ works. With permission from the web site I’m posting on most forums (those I have access to) and asking for if I may use the photos posted in those forums. There are so many really wonderful photos and I would greatly love to be able to turn them into art.

For any of you that grant me this permission I can assure you that if I use one of your photos I will be more than happy to include you as the photos original owner on any finished work. I’ve been saying for years now that someday I’d like to actually try and sell my art work but as yet I haven’t even tried. I would like to some day. But for now I just basically play around with them and see what I come up with.

So if you don’t care if I copy/use your photos please just let me know in this post. And ‘thank you’ in advance to whom ever gives me their kind permission!

God Bless,
GrammyJo ;o)

Hi GrammyJo! Welcome to the garden!

I know most folks have the copyright thing on their photo's and don't like others to use them, especially for profit.

I wouldn't mind you using my photo's at all, but I doubt you'd find even one of mine that you could even play around with it to make it look like art! ^_^ I am not good at photography and my pictures are usually out of focus and not good quality. If you are somehow able to take one of my bad pictures and "tweak" it to use as art, I would be honored for you to use it. If you have a magic wand, feel free to use any photo I post. LOL.

I really admire anyone with talent and creativity, I would love to see some of your artwork!

Blessings,
Lin

I forgot to say, you might want to post your request over here on the discussion forum also:

Honestly no matter where you post, not everyone is going to see your post (and cross-posting things to a ton of forums is generally discouraged), so personally I'd recommend finding pics you like and then dmailing the individual who took the picture to see if they would let you use it. Even if someone gives you blanket permission, I'd probably still check in with them on individual pics that you plan to use--I've seen a number of people do things like take photos from other websites and post them here since they aren't aware that they shouldn't do that, so at the very least you need to verify that they actually do own the rights to the picture. And even in Plant Files, sometimes people will (with permission) upload someone else's pic to Plant Files, but you'd have to talk to the person who really owns the photo before you could use it (and when the person gives you blanket permission to use their pics, they may not have remembered that they did something like that)

plantladylin, thank you so much. You’d be surprised at how some photos can be ‘tweaked’ and what they can become. If I do use any of yours I’ll send you a copy. ;o)

ecrane3, that’s a really GOOD point about verifying that a photo IS actually theirs. Thanks! All of your points are right on. Again…I haven’t actually tried to sell anything as yet. I’m aware that there’s a lot of ‘gray’ area when it comes to online photos. I occasionally ‘glean’ photos from my ‘temp’ files and normally have NO idea where they came from. I make a conscious effort NOT to keep anything that remotely looks like a professional photo and certainly pass over ANY photo that has any signature (or printing of any kind) on it since it’s obvious to me that it is someone’s, someone who cared enough about intellectual property to put their name, etc. on it. But having said all of that should I actually use one of my ‘gleaned’ photos and try and sell the finished product some day I plan on putting a ‘disclaimer’ on that web site or page letting everyone know that some original photos I’ve used might be copyrighted unbeknownst to me and tell them to contact me if I’ve done so. And I realize that I might be asking for trouble in doing that also. But ‘just in case’ I’d feel it necessary to do it and could only hope that I didn’t actually USE any photos I shouldn’t have.

I’ll think about your suggestion about just asking about individual photos. That might be the best way to go. Other wise I’ll make sure to ask if the photo(s) in question are actually the posters own uploaded ones or if they might have posted a photo off the web. Thanks again for the ‘heads up’. If I may use your photos please let me know and if not, no prob. at all!

Grammy--I actually have artistic aspirations myself and have intentions to hopefully someday sell things made with my photos or with artwork that I do based on my photos. However not all of my photos would be ones that I'd want to do anything with, so if there's a particular one you have your eye on please feel free to contact me about it.

Thank you so much ecrane3. The only art I do now is working with photos in my various software progs. I LOVE photography and use most of my own photos. I’m NOT a trained photographer but with the right camera most any of us can take a good picture. ;o) I haven’t actually painted anything on canvas or paper in YEARS but used to do that also. Digital is sooooo much fun, very gratifying and almost instantaneous (results). Do you do any work with digital software? It’s a ton of fun.

No, I'm not really into digital art--I'll touch up photos to make them look better but then I either use the photo as-is, or I do colored pencil drawings.
