Geraniums chase aphids away

Somerset, PA

I just wanted to share this with you all. This spring I planted geraniums close to my roses and they have been aphid free. About two weeks ago I noticed two of my black eyed susans were just covered with aphids. I took a few geranium leaves and old blossoms and just put them right down in the middle of the black eyed susans. The aphids are GONE! I guess you could just sit a potted geranium next to an aphid infestation and it would probably work, too.

Very interesting! Just to clarify, are your geraniums the real geraniums in genus Geranium, or are they the other geraniums in genus Pelargonium? Especially if it's a Pelargonium with scented leaves it wouldn't surprise me if it had some bug-repellent properties, the citronella plant is Pelargonium citrosum and I would expect some of its relatives might have similar properties.

I am gob smacked that this works, just wish my Geraniums would shock the white fly into moving away, we have had a real outbreak of white fly this year and they are a real pest, it is cooler now so they are disappearing faster, but cant say I have noticed them working as you have found, I think it is great if it worked for you. good lick. ecrane3, My brain just does not register anything but commom names. All I know is that I bought the geraniums at Lowe's. End of season specials last year. The most common kind they sell here in PA. I could send a photo if you like.

I suspect they're probably Pelargoniums in that case but a picture would tell for sure. If you rub the leaves, do they have a scent of any sort?

ecrane3, I searched the plant files and I would say that my geraniums are in genus Pelargonium. They do have a strong aroma. Here is a picture of my windowbox. The geraniums are somewhat tall and spindley because I fed them all winter. I realize now, that was not needed. I took cuttings from my other geraniums and started new plants with them, but left these two as they were. Appreciate any further info you could give me. Thanks.
