What can I do about mushrooms in my flower beds?

Dayton, OH

I have little mushrooms growing in my flower beds. What causes them and what can I do to get rid of them?

Thanks,

Do you have mulch? Stuff like that will frequently grow up from the mulch, it doesn't usually do any harm so I leave them alone and they go away on their own after a little while.

I keep mixing the mulch up, knocking them down and aerating the mulch. This seems to help. I have to as my one dog thinks they are a delicacy (her older sister knows better). Her digestive system does not agree. :(((

Ecrane is right, I get them growing wherever I have wood bark mulch, it is natures way of dealing with the decaying wood mulch in my case, they do not harm the plants at all, but you need to be careful in case they are poisonous ones and that could be a disaster for your kids or dogs, I just kick them off their stalks and they die fast, or pick them and get rid some other way, they will keep comming back for some time until the mushroom spawn has been used up, within the wood mulch, this could take a long time, there is no known killer for this though other than hand picking before the formed mushrooms make more spawn, it is normally air-born but sometimes spreads underground depending on the type of mushrooms you have, good luck. I was told that if you have mushrooms growing in your flowerbeds, it means you have really good soil.

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Mushrooms are the fruiting body of a fungus which is feeding off the decaying organic matter in soil. Some are poisonous, some aren't, but they won't harm your plants.
Some can actually be pretty due to their colors, but enticing to children at the same time, so better to eliminate them when you notice them just to be on the safe side.

Thanks for all the information, everyone! It was helpful.
