My peas

Black Creek, WI

Are about 6 inches tall and starting to get flowers, I am not sure exactly how many I planted but have 2 -40ft rows my daughter is extatic and wants peas but since they are so small should I get rid of the flowers until they get taller?

No! If these are sweet peas, aka English peas, they are a cool-weather crop and won't flower or produce in hot weather. If they are flowering now, this is what you'll get.

If they are southern peas, that's a different story.

Assuming English peas, it may be cool enough in parts of Wisconsin to grow them in the summertime. Some cultivars are very dwarf and start blooming at 4-6 inches. In any case you do not want to remove blossoms. If you know which cultivar you planted, then you can judge better whether normal growth is taking place.

This Dakota, which only gets about a foot tall, but is a great yielding English pea. There are cultivars which are even smaller.

it's not the height you want for good peas, it's the flowers as these are what form the pods, make sure you give them plenty of water as they are hungry plants, if you are in an area where there are water restrictions, then give them a good soak and add a thick mulch along the rows to help retain moisture, even grass cuttings will help as a mulch and then after the peas are harvested, you can dig the grass into the soil, dont add grass cuttings if the grass has seed heads or it will germinate and give you even more digging to do later on. when you have finished with your peas and beans, just cut off the top growth and dig in the roots as these hold on to nutrients and are good for the soil if added when you next turn over the soil for your next crop of different veg, I never plant the same crops in the same area year after year but rotate the crops for 3 years, as all veg take or add different things from or to the soil and it helps give a better balance of nutrients as the years go on, good luck, hope you get a good harvest.
