Hi
I'd like some suggestions on how to edge beds. I have used edging (some kind of sod like strips, bricks) and find they are either unattractive or making edge trimming impossible. I know some people just dig trenches and while that looks neat, it doesn't quite strike the formal-informal balanace I am going for. I like the kind of edging that sidewalks have. Any thoughts? Thanks from Canada!
Edging beds
Hi janet59. I guess I'm not sure I'm following you when you talk about the edging sidewalks have. Is there a picture of the sidewalks you could show us? I'm thinking of our plain old sidewalks that are just big ol slabs of concrete with grass on each side! You must have really NICE sidewalks in Canada!
I'm wondering if you mean something done with a Unilock type product. Did you check out Unilock.com for ideas? Tomorrow or Friday, I will take a picture of my patio and post it here. On the sides where my beds are, I had him build a kind of small retaining wall like thing to keep the mulch off the beds (I have 2-50 lb. dogs that run through my beds). Mine are straight-lined because they border the patio but I'm sure they could build something similar in a curving flowing shape. Honestly, I'd like to do that but I think I would look like I have stone everywhere. I HATE digging out the trenches, even as nice as it looks. I never even finished mine this year, that's how much I despise it!
Hi Janet59 -
Don't know if this is what you're looking for but here's the picture of mine. I think it can look formal or informal. I think my garden is informal. You'd have to weed whack though as the lawn mower couldn't get close enough. My mom just gave me some old issues of the "Home and Garden" section of the Chicago Tribune that has a picture of a garden with a stonework wall that looks formal-informal. I don't know if you'd want to share your address with me, but I would be happy to mail it to you. I'm sorry, I don't have a scanner or I would have done that and posted.
