Hi all,
Please forgive me if this has been posted before (I am sure it has). I just bought some landscaping fabric for weed control issues, and will be planting my first ever flower/shrub garden in the front of my home. I was told by a couple avid gardeners to get the fabric, but my question is are the flowers able to reseed/spread and grow with the fabric on the ground?
Thanks
Landscape Fabrics
Anything that prevents weeds from growing will also prevent reseeding--nothing is perfect at preventing weeds which means they won't be perfect at preventing reseeding either, but it will definitely cut down on your success rate. And even the seedlings that do manage to germinate won't be able to get their roots down into good soil underneath the fabric, so they'll end up not doing very well (great if it's weeds that germinated, not so great if it's a plant!) Newspaper might be a better choice than the landscape fabric, it works very well to control weeds but it decomposes over time and will give your reseeded seedlings a much better chance. Personally I feel it's better for the soil underneath than the landscape fabric too, it allows air and water to pass more freely than the fabric does and creates a better environment for the beneficial worms, bugs, etc that live in your soil.
Thanks
