It is a catterpilar of some kind and it eats greenery, so the best thing to do is remove it and either kill it or take it a long walk away from your garden, preferably where there is a flock of birds, if you dont get rid, it will turn into a butterfly or moth and the process will start all over again. good luck. I completely removed the plant from my garden and destroyed it. I couldn't believe how quickly it infested the plant. I give every plant in my garden at least a quick look every day and overnight these took over the plant. I haven't found them on any other plants so hopefully I have avoided a full scale invasion. My biggest problem this year is with cabbage loopers. My poor broccoli looks like someone took a shotgun to it.
