I have a new home with a completley barren front yard. I live in Houston, TX and I was curious if anyone had an ideas for "not-so-common" plants that I could plant in my front yard.
If you toss me some ideas - I'm thinking about looking on ebay for some seeds. I just wanted to know I guess what some of you all's favorite plants are.
I am 100% new to gardening/landscaping - not even sure what zone I live in, but my zip is 77038.
Any help is appreciated.

Help in Houston
You're probably in zone 9a; most of us Houstonians are. You can look here: http://davesgarden.com/zone/
Check out the Texas Forum. There have been posts with lots of suggestions. There is also a Round up (RU) in Houston next month. It is a great way to meet other people that garden in Houston, and many people are very generous with the "extra" plants they have. My barren yard is beginning to fill up fast from the 3 round ups I have been to this spring/summer.

I have 3 large crepe myrtle trees that you may have if you dig them up and move. I live in Houston.
Medford,
You need to visit these folks http://houstonbotanicgarden.org/
Here are some other links to investigate. Seeing what has been successful in public places is a great way to learn.
