A co-worker has requested an amaryllis as an office plant. Has anyone ever managed to get one to rebloom after all the original gorgeous hothouse flowers have died off?
Amaryllis as an office plant
They are like most other lilies--they bloom once a year and then the green begins to die back so the plant can go dormant until the next season.
Here in UK we can only grow those huge big bulbs indoors, they are best with only the bottom half of the bulb planted onto a small pot of compost so the rest of the bulb is sitting proud of the soil, the flowers grow on giant stems first, then the foliage grows, after the flowers die off, cut the stem right back as far down as possible, then let the foliage grow the large strappy leaves, when this dies down you cut it off, stop watering the bulb and let it dry off, next winter, spring, restart the bulb again, do the same methods but pot it into fresh new compost, give a liquid feed at the second watering, the bulbs dont like to sit in wet soil or they rot. good luck.
