Somehow I thought I'd already posted this, but it's not there, so I guess I did something wrong. I'm new to gardening and have an asparagus plant that is very tall and spindly, with branches that are the same, and have tiny green balls on them. Have they gone to seed? I think it's too early for that. We moved here last August, so I'm not sure about any of the things that are coming up in this garden, but this plant is definitely asparagus. We had some last fall (yum), and I cut it back for this year, but all it did was grow and grow and grow. Obviously I have no idea what I'm doing. Can someone help me. Thanks so much.
can I still get asparagus this year?
If your spears are tall and spindly with balls at the tips, then I'd say yes, it has gone to seed. Have you put any compost on it? I seem to remember they are heavy feeders. It's been 30 years since I grew any so I have a few cobwebs on my info. Here's a site with lots of good info on growing veggies. Hopefully, this will take you straight to the page about asparagus.

Hope this helps.
Asparagus goes straight to seed if you don't cut it. It's not too early. This is one of the earliest vegetables to harvest. It's too late now. Let the ferns grow, feed them, and anticipate cutting them first thing they pop up next spring.
Thank you. I'll go to the site on vegetables as you've suggested. Too bad I missed my chance for this year, but oh well, if I take care of it properly now, next year should be great.
