First Time Growing Onions - In pots

Maidstone, United Kingdom

For my birthday at the end of April, I was given some pots and stuff to begin growing some veg. Only have a balcony to grow things on I am attempting to grow things in pots.

One of the things I'm growing is some onions. Growing them from sets. I planted them up (at the end of April when I received them) in some troughs to begin with and have since planted them out into pots, but i don't know how well they are doing or if there is anything else I should be doing.

At the moment, the bulbs are about the same size they were when I planted them, but they have grown some roots and also have grown long green shoots, about a foot or so long which are wilting floppy. Is this what they are supposed to be doing?

I've not been watering them very much, about once a week and not vast amounts then. Is that about right or should I be watering less or more?

Is there anything I should be doing to help the onions along?

Any help very much appreciated.

To start with, onions take a good deal of water, when you shred an onion, look how much juice comes out, this is the intake of moisture that has been added at growing time, you would have been better to have left them in the troughs as this would have allowed more space for the roots and more soil therefore more soil to take the moisture required, if the onions are floppy, they are telling you they need more water but being in pots means you need to do it more often than once per week, also the floppy green shoots are the tops of the onions, this is what they do to be able to grow, but floppy could mean either the onion is ready to pick, or it is about to form a flower head and go to seed which means you wont have a nice onion to eat if it flowers, Try offering more water to see if you can delay the flowering state, next year, grow them as you started this time in troughs for better results, you can grow lots of veg in tubs and pots, but it depends on what veg and the size of the veg/roots, you can grow tomato easily in pots so long as you water them often, you can grow pick and grow lettuce tool potatoes in a large Polly bag so long as you add more compost over the top as the foliage shows through, there are books at the library that will help you with this type of gardening as it would be a shame if you gave up after one single disappointment, so try again next year after you learn what the different veg needs are for patio or pot growing, it is fun and easy once you know how, good luck.
