Help! Hemlock Wooley Adelgid

I was told that the evidence of wooly adelgid in hemlock are small masses of a "cottony" material. I have found some small areas of "spittle" such as that left by spittle bugs. Do spittle bugs attack hemlocks or is this from the wooly adelgid?

To me, it sounds like you have spittle bugs, and they don't "attack" or cause damage like the adelgids do. If you can reach them, just hose them off. The spittle protects the body and it will dry out if it is "washed" off.

Thank you CEEJAYTOWN for your response. What you wrote seems to be the general opinion that it is, indeed, just a few spittle bugs.
