I have well-established coneflowers that are beginning to obstruct pathways and sidewalks. I would love to move them to "safer" locations because of pedestrian traffic and because they are just getting over-crowded. How and when do I do this? Thanks. Kathy
Transplanting established coneflowers
Spring or fall. Just dig up and replant elsewhere. Water in well. Enjoy the flowers for now though!
You might learn from my mistake--avoid moving them in the summer. I tried digging a single plant that was extremely crowded. It had one bud at the time, which I removed before relocating the plant. The plant didn't like it at all and went into a severe sulk. I cut it back, keeping just a few wilted leaves, and only now does it seem to be perking back up.
So, yep--spring or fall. I would move them when they're small or after you've cut them back and given them some time to rejuvenate. Don't move them when it's hot or when they're blooming.
HudsonValley,
I just went through this yesterday! I did it now because they were being damaged since it is the walkway to the house's front door. If I could have waited, I would have.

Here's how mine looked before hand.
Thanks everyone! Enjoy them, I will.
