germinating beans

Berkeley, CA(Zone 9a)

I have planted (and replanted) two different kinds of pole beans and only t seeds germinated. I even soaked them and planted with inoculent.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

What varieties?

I soak for just a few minutes and then plant less than 1 inch deep in good soil and then water the soil with a light spray/mist nozzle for a few minutes. They come up in 5-7 days.

How fresh were the seeds you planted, and are they the seeds you buy or are they from beans you bought as a fully grown veg to eat, if the seeds were from a reputable seed company, then cant think of what went wrong, either buried too deep, soil too dry at planting time, or mice or birds eat the seeds before they got the chance to germinate, both types are normally easy to germinate, so maybe if you gave us a bit more detail about the seeds, the soil, the watering and the general cultivation method you used would let us help you further. Some were blue lake pole and some Neopolotin Pole. The seeds were kept well, but, yes, they were from last year. Usually this is not the problem for me. My soaker system MAY not have given then enough water and we just got out of a very hot spell, unusual for us and I should have hand watered a little every day. I've re-seeded for the third time! I'll wait.

We have had such irratic weather here...I am having the same problems. Sigh. I soak seeds about an hour, plant in good dirt and moistened. The seeds are fresh for this year from burpee. Mine are burgundy beans. I am sure ours is weather related. It was HOT and dry, then cooler but wet with hail, now HOT again and heavy rains almost every day. Is there any hope of growing them now? I am still in the 70's at Christmas. I so wanted green beans.

dun1kirk I do hope you get some going...good luck and I hope you get the info you need. What has your weather been like, is it irratic there too?

I'd blame the weather, too.

Three times this sping, my plantings of beans failed to germinate in the cold wet soil. 4th time was the charm, baby beans now getting true leaves. Same seeds, same garden, same soil - different weather.

I had no idea what I was doing so I started some green bean seeds (blue lake bush) indoors at the same time I started some outdoors. The ones I planted indoors came up earlier and today are much more vigorous plants than the ones started outdoors, even though I later read that you shouldn't start them indoors. *shrug*
