I posted this last night but I didn't have a photo.....I still don't have a photo of the actual hanging basket plant, but I did find a (look alike) photo of the flowers that come on it at the end of the season (fall)......the color is wrong on these flowers but the way each vine grows upward with the flowers on end (4-5 inches in length)......maybe this will help jog your memory.
==============================================================
I know this may be hard to do without a photo but maybe someone can help me. Last Mother's Day, my daughter purchased a hanging basket for me. It had very full/thick long vines with green leaves on it ...they were kinda fuzzy. It had NO flowers on it. When she gave it to me...the vines were about 1 to1-1/2 feet long, but by the end of the summer the vines were about 3 feet long.
Then, in the fall the ends of the vines began turning and growing upwards and got a bunch of little (fushia) flowers on them which later turned to seed (which I saved). It was an awesome sight to see...
I didn't think to take a photo of it. I looked and looked online trying to find out what type of plant it was but couldn't find it...at that time I didn't know about this website.
TIA...Von
Hanging Basket Plant ID
The flower in your picture looks like some sort of Salvia, but it is an upright plant and does not have the growth habit you describe.
Do you remember the shape of the leaves--elongated, round, heart shaped? Also, was the stem round, squared or something else? Was it hanging in sun, shade or a little of both? Little details like this might help us figure out what you had.
Thanks for trying to help. The plant didn't have an ID tag with it.
The stems on the vines were soft, round and very flexible, they just draped down over the basket....the leaves were a medium green and a LITTLE fuzzy to the touch....they were a little bit bigger than a quarter and they more heart shaped.
I was a little disappointed when I saw that there were no flowers growing on it (but tried not to show it). I first hung it on the porch in the shade...then I moved it out into the sun and it flourished there too. It was amazing to look at and afterwards my daughter wished she'd got one for herself. It grew and lasted from Mother's Day until it got to cold to live outside (WV). I gave up hope on it ever having flowers, but then one day the tips of each vine began to grow upward, which I thought was weird, and they began to get little baby flowers on them and continued to grow another 3-4 inches of nothing but flowers.
I regret that I didn't take photos of it, I would love to have another one someday. The only hope I have is to go back to the seasonal, side of the road, people who sold it to her....which will have to be next spring now....if they come back.
TIA, Von
It's difficult to father it out without a picture, but maybe the plant was one that you grow in the hanging basket purely for the foliage and then they flower like all plants do at the end of their growing times, so looking for foliage only plants for baskets may help you find out what it was named, the flowers growing upwards was probably them looking towards the light, at the end of the season, the natural light is not too good so a hanging plant will ofter turn upwards to catch the light. hope you can find the name so you can enjoy it again, good luck. WeeNel.
WeeNel, you are probably right....the green foliage was beautiful....the leaves almost looked fake, they were on the thick side and had the feel of the material Felt. I will look for those types of plants to see if I can find it. Thanks.
Carolyn, the leaves don't look like it but the flowers that came on it at the end of the season does. Thanks.
Von
