Let's continue to share our tropical plants and gardens.
They are all beautiful and appreciated.

gessiegail, I am looking forward to seeing your bromeliad baskets.
Where is that nursery?

And yes, I did get this basket out of the trash (smile).

Rj, we got a few drops of rain , nothing measurable.
You can plant those seeds and I think they do better when they are fresh.
Texasbigleaves and truetropical77 have successfully grown alocasias and colocasais from seeds, they might be able to give you a few tips. I am usually on the receiving end of their hard work.
Here is a baby of colocasia Thai -Giant that Texasbigleaves started this Spring.

Floridabunnie, The plant is a princess flower (Tibouchina urvilleana). I have it planted in the ground with some afternoon shade. I brought it back from Florida about two years ago and it is over six ft. now. I love it.

Placentiarita, don't you love your Tibouchina? I have one too and it hasn't bloomed this year yet, but I don't mind, I LOVE the big fuzzy leaves....
How to you plant your bromeliads in the basket, is it directly in the thingy (what is it called, peat moss?) or do you add soil? I'm zero knowledge with bromeliads but you guys are getting me SO hooked with those beauties in baskets!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Ya know my Tibouchina hasn't bloomed so much this year either. I never know what conditions that plant wants...dry, wet, inbetween ...it just blooms when it feels like.

Those seeds off the borneo are probably knocked off by the rain yesterday. It's not like they aren't spreading like weeds already anyway!

Red Oak, TX

Hey Prita and TxBigleaves- look at this seedling!

Some of my amorphophallus!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I don't know how...but 3 of those amorphophallus have appeared in a pot of mine. I have no idea what to do, or how to care for them. I suspect they came from zone9 as seeds somehow.

Red Oak, TX

Rj, Could you take a pic of the Amorphophallus for me? I'm interested in seeing what type they are. If they are already leafed out just water them like you would an EE. And when they go dormant in the winter you can dig up the bulb and move them.

I am going to copy you, placenrita (sp?) with all your pots on the ground with mulch. That looks so nice........and my ground is too hard to cultivate for tropicals.........

When I find those pics of baskets of bromeliads I promise to return........

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Okay..I'll photo them tomorrow.

Red Oak, TX

robcorreia, I do love the leaves on the tibouchina. Most of my bromeliad baskets are lined with moss or coconut liner. My soil is regular potting soil mixed with lanscapers' mix and a little chicken fertilizer. So far my only problem is too much sun.

Rj, the last time I checked, Borneo Giant was going for $30 for the 6" pot. You will have them popping up everywhere, lucky you.
Whenever I find amorphallus popping up in my pots, I know exactly where they came from. Truetropical77 was there.

Truetropical77 your Thi-Giant is about 3 times the size of mine. What are you feeding that thing?

gessiegail, the stuff you see in that flower bed with the pots is grass clippings and leaves that I would pick up from around my yard and neighborhood.
Looking forward to seeing those pictures. rita

Rita, so they don't like too much sun huh? It's good that you told me.///I was thinking about hanging the broms from my south facing trellis, it gets very hot there....so I will take that into consideration! Last night I took my brom I have in the living room and held it up to see how it would look overthere, it will be so pretty! Now I just have to go get a moss basket.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Really? that much?
Yes the other borneo's I have are busy popping pups every where...I'll be overwhelmed with them in no time..
what's the plant in the hanging basket? love it.
Didn't have time to take picts of the amorphallus, but am off work tomorrow..and it rained again just now...dropped the temp from 93F to 74, so I'll have a head start not having to water everything tomorrow morning..
I tell ya..this hot dry has been wearing me out trying to keep up with watering

Red Oak, TX

Rj, with all the promise of rain we did not get a drop, so sad .
The plant is a Nong Nooch Vine, it has been in bloom since early spring.
This is another plant that has been blooming since I bought it from Zone 9, it makes me smile every time I look at it. Blue Ginger.

I love those blue gingers!

North of Atlanta, GA(Zone 8a)

Rita, Love your blue ginger and the yellow vines in basket. Did you say those were Nong Nooch Vine?

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Okay..I thought it was the Nong Nooch vine...Wayne's has been blooming a long time too.
I was just out in the garden fiddling around when I heard a Hiiiissssss...BOOM!
and that's why I'm inside checking email...lighting about gave me a haircut...it's raining again..hopefully some will head your way...this hot has been making me crazy trying to keep everything watered..bought a bunch of soil to upgrade some of the pots..as everything is huge and dries out very quickly

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

any of the Big Ear folks know what this is? I lost the tag..thought it croaked..dumped on soil last year..and it's of course growing..bought it at the Mercer Arboretum

robcorreia, I am trying to get a few cuttings rooted, so far no luck. I would like to have them all over the garden, and some to share. When something works for me, I like to have lots of them.

LiliMerci, thanks, the vine is a nong nooch vine(Petraeovitex bambusetorum). I have
seen them at Longee's mail order.

Rj, No rain for me,( head hanging low) last night was my last chance for a while, so it's back to the garden hose for me.
So sorry, I do not know what your plant is. Maybe if you would post a picture on the Aroid forum, Lari Ann or Brian Williams might see it and give you a posative ID. I like it whatever it is, and you also have a baby coming up too.

Cape Coral, FL(Zone 10a)

Thanks for the ID on the pricess flower - they are so pretty, I won't pass them up next time. Love the nong nooch vine as well.

Everyone has such great pics of their gardens!

San Diego, CA(Zone 10b)

Rita, I, also trying to learn how to root cuttings...I've started 4 cuttings of my noid brugmansia, so far two went to heaven and 2 I think are going strong...I can't wait!
I really got inspired with everyone's bromeliads....do you think they should be in mostly shade here in san diego? it was pretty scorching today!

Red Oak, TX

phughes, thank you. It is plumbago in the hanging basket, they are so easy to grow. I have a white one also. I was fixing to trim it back so that the colous could get a little more light.

floridabunny, you are welcome.

robcorreia, I am new to rooting cuttings, so far, I have had a few successes. The bromeliads will definately do a lot better with some shade, from my experiences with them.
Aechmea blanchetiana can take a little more sun.

I have a plumbago in the ground but never thought about putting one in a hanging basket. I think that is much prettier and may have to steal your idea.

Miami, FL(Zone 10a)
