*I have four hybrid tea roses, all which were bought at the same time and planted in the same conditions (this spring). They have all been in full sun and watered and fed regularly. They are growing in containers.*
One of my roses is dying! It hasn't put out any new growth, except for two little leaf buds, and those shriveled and died, too. As far as I can tell, there aren't any pests or any fungus on it. Occasionally a piece would rot, but I'd clip it off and the rest of the branch would be fine. Finally I dug it up today, not knowing what else to do. The amount of roots it had when I planted it has decreased rather alarmingly! They're all growing off to one side, too, and all the big ones are gone. I've got it inside in a bucket of water, as of about 15 minutes ago. Is this fungus, or shock, or under or over-watering...or something? Can anyone help me, please? I don't know what else to do for it!
Dying Rose Plant
It would help if you could post some pictures, but if it has less roots now than it did when you planted it, I strongly suspect a fungus, most likely caused by overwatering. If that's what happened, I would cut off any roots that look brown/mushy, then repot in some fresh soil and watch the watering (and I'd doublecheck that you're not watering the others too much too, it could be this one was just a little weaker to begin with and was more affected, but the others may start to develop problems down the road)
I planted a whole bed of roses several years ago and everyone was fine with the exception of one that just struggled, it seems the way with roses, however, Ecrane has said the best advice, trim off all the damaged roots, you could try dipping the roots into a fungicide powder you can buy at the garden center too and see if this helps, but it should have been well established by now, call or visit the place you bought the roses to tell them what has happened, also look in the soil you had the rose as there may have been some insect eating at the soft tender roots as there are some that do this, you should also add a fair bit of organic matter to the soil as roses like rich humus soil at the roots to let air into the soil and also add feed, you never said how often you were adding feed to the plants, but in the garden soil you should only need to feed them in early spring when you see the buds breaking, then end of autumn when you prune them as roses make roots under ground in the winter, it is normally just the top growth that stops for the winter, maybe you have over fed them, look for little white grubs in the soil, they are horse shoe shaped and the black parent beetle lays her eggs in the soil and the grubs eat the roots till they mature and fly off, good luck. Weenel.
Oh, sorry! Here is a picture.
I'm really, really new at this. I've been feeding them every two weeks. I've been watering them every week, and giving them about 2.8 liters/ 0.75 gallons of water each.
If I can't repot it until tomorrow, should I leave it in the water over night?
I'll check the soil and the other roses, too!
Just wrap it in damp newspaper for the night, I would say you have been over watering them if they are in pots, have you got plenty drainage at the bottom to stop them sitting in a dish of water, if it is a very large pot, I always add some broken clay pots or smallish stones as a layer at the bottom of my pots so the soil and plants are not sitting in water, so check this out too, you need good drainage for large plants that are going to be in a pot for years, also you have been over feeding them, the roots get burned with too much feeding as they have too much at short intervals, the roots have not had time to use the feed up, then you add more, so the plant root get burned with this, just feed once each season, spring, then autumn, that is more than enough, hope this helps you out till you can get on the right track. good luck, WeeNel.
I just went over the roots for squishy ones, and found some. They're removed now.
Alright, I'll wrap it up, then, and fix the feeding and drainage issues. (There is water sitting in the trays below the pots.)
Thank-you both so much for your assistance!!!
