Mornin :-)
Hope all goes well with your tests Betty .. I have to agree .. that "KAK" that you have to drink is pretty miserable stuff .. you're doing well .. some patients are DONE after 2 swallows !!
Have a wonderful time on your trip .. :-)
Sandra .. my Bee Balm is a flourish of greenery .. but I can see it starting to head up, as well my Delphiniums look about ready to burst ..
50/50 chance of rain today .. I find I have to surf about FIVE sites now in order to make an 'informed decision' on what the day will bring and what I should do .. weather is FOR SURE and INexact science !! Considering I watered lots of the flowers & beds early this morning .. I'm banking on it being a rainy day LoL
Off to town for meeting #1 .. another one tonight ..
Take care out there :-)
~M~
What's Happening in YOUR neighborhood today #5
I'm hoping your watering will make it rain down my way too :-) Heaven knows we need it bad!
Carol
Thought you looked very proper in your dress. I love the one hour thing. Back in school I got lost in Home Ec and put a sleeve in a neck hole...I think that's why I switched to the garden!
I will keep my fingers crossed for you with the weather. We just had nasty hail here and in 15 minutes got 15 mm of hail/rain/
My super canna now looks like a palm tree thing. Oh well I did take some photos the other day before this. Maybe a few bugs took the trip to their demise! I mean the nasty bugs not the good ones.
Cheers for now.
Ann
Whoa .. talk about changes in the weather !!!! It's like a Fall morning here in Thunder Bay .. wind from the northwest .. and temp just 50F !!
On the way home from my meeting last evening .. I went through several 'bands of rain' .. always find that so odd .. it's raining on one section of the highway , and bright and clear and dry less than a mile ahead :-)
2 Bunny Rabbits greeted me along the driveway, and, as cute as they are .. well .. DH garden is more than likely going to suffer some losses. He is thinking of putting up an electric fence to keep out the deer .. I always worry about the cat though .. what if he walks through the garden (or should I sat STRUT) with his tail UP .. ZZZAAAPPP !!! I'd sure feel bad.
On with VCARS today .. figure I'll throw myself into cleaning the house .. seems if I do that .. I don't get called out by the police. Course .. if Ido, I do .. always nice to be able to help someone in need.
Off to walk down for the paper and survey any WIND damage ..
Enjoy your day ..
~M~
PS .. Ann .. I went to Catholic Girls School .. no Home Ec .. so my Mom sent me to a night school program to learn the basics (I was about 16) .. the teacher was very busy .. we were making an apron .. I marvelled at how quickly the other students were progressing .. the teacher got to me on our third class .. here I had been running the sewing machine in REVERSE !! Still have the apron ...
Hi
Edmonton seems to be clouded over today after last evenings ### Hail storm. So maybe I will go and do a better survey of the damage. I think it will show better after a few days and then I can prune out the really bad stuff. Anyway it was super to have a cool evening to go to bed by.
MarilynneS....thanks for not letting me think I was the only sewing class wacko, I didn't get to keep my project ,the teacher took a photo as she couldn't believe my mistake and my mom used it for rags, Oh well we can't be good at everything!
Ann
Hi again from Vancouver,
Looks good again here. Was a lovely day yesterday for a jaunt to Victoria and Butchart Gardens on Vancouver Island. You can see a bit of that in the adventures of Dave and Bulwinkle thread.
Today - not much on the agenda. Will head out to DD's house this morning by Skytrain. Must be back downtown in time to get ready for the conference banquet which is this evening.
Ann
IT"S ME...lol in Chicago with DG friends..having a great time, tomorrow we go downtown Chicago and do sightseeing..I'm excited..trip took me a bit longer than I thought, but arrived safely so that's what counts..
Can't stay long on computer as Judy's kids have e-mails to do...
Will sign in again tomorrow..
Do hope you've enjoyed your day...
Miss you all..
Sounds like you ladies are having a great time!
2nd last day before judging here - pottering around getting last minute things finished.
I am about ready to kill Fancy. I keep my carrots covered with remay because we have carrot rust fly here and that is the only way to grow decent carrots. Last week she got into the garden, up in the bed and tore holes in the remay and rolled back the rebar . I was not happy. I fixed it up again but this afternoon I replaced the remay with a new piece all nice and tidy. Half an hour ago I looked out to see her up in the carrots - rolled the rebar off, destroyed the remay again and half the carrot crop! She is not in my good books - in fact I am not allowing her outside at all. I guess I will have to put a fence around the carrots the way I do the cabbage! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
Sorry to hear this fancyvan. Also you know there will always be a disaster when you're working towards something. Good news. You just had yours and its done. Its all good now. Sorry Fancy but you derserve your house restrictions little friend.
Well at least I haven't had hail....yet!
And Fancy is such a pretty dog, to be such a bad girl!!
Tsk Tsk Fancy!!
My wishes & thoughts are with you, FancyVan!
Damp, ikky and dreary in Thunder Bay today ... a WONDERFUL day for blackflies and mosquitoes.
Looks as though it'll be a day to stay in and catch up on housework .. be still my heart !!!
Took delivery of my new gas range yesterday .. have christened it 'Darth Vader' .. it's unceremoniously parked in front of the treadmill (awwwwwww what a shame) will be installed next week .. this going from electric to gas had best be a good change ... not to mention the stove is BLACK .. a huge leap of faith for me .. and DH is worried that I MAY be starting to hint re a new fridge !! Fortunately the kitchen is large enough that the fridge and stove are not in close proximity.. soooo .. we'll see ..
OH FancyVan .. what can I say about the wee Poocheroo !! Seems to be that if a rabbit or a deer does the damage it's a bit more acceptable .. sorry to hear about the 'faux pas' !!
As well .. many good wishes coming from my way re the judging .. fingers and toes crossed !!
Nice to know Betty arrives safe and sound and is embarking on a FUN day :-)
Off to buckets and brooms ..
~M~
BETTY here, all dressed ready for a day of sightseeing in Chicago..Steve says that we'll walk about 5 miles..shucks guess who forgot her walking shoes? Always buy a pair I guess...it's a hot day, glad I broght coolant bandana's for everyone..sat at the kitchen table last night finishing them all so we could wear them today..we'll have a bit of a tropical look about us..everyone will know we're 'tourists' enjoying Judy and Liz...
Miss you
Sounds like you're all having a wonderful time Betty. Enjoy!

Good morning from Vancouver. Our last day here - we head back to Ottawa late this afternoon. DH has early meetings this morning, but is finished half way through the morning. DD, DSIL and baby Leila will meet us around noon. They propose driving us to the airport, but we think they've forgotten how much space the baby carriage takes in the trunk of their car. LOL No matter. DH can charge a taxi fare.
Tomorrow I have 3 yards of mulch delivered which I will have to deal with to get my gardens ready for the Ottawa Horticultural Society tour next Thursday. I hope it doesn't rain evey day - I will get wet if it does.
Have a great day.
Ann
Good luck with the mulch Ann! A couple of years ago I decided to mulch and calculated I needed 4 c yds. I had more than half left over ( still have some actually) and was passing it out to everybody since it was on my parking pad. This year I had 2 c.yds delivered and I still have left overs! Oh well it will sit there all winter covered with a tarp and I will use it next year.
Hey next time you go to Vancouver do a stopover in Calgary and we will have another mini round up ! .
Well I have a couple of neighbours who will likely take some mulch quite happily if I have too much. DH says I'm nuts, but almost my whole front lawn is unmulched Hosta garden, the garden was extended in the back yard and there is the no-man's land at the north edge in among my rhubarb plants where nothing else but weeds grow ... I suspect I can get rid of it but time will tell.
Will talk to DH. The next trip is to Vancouver in August, but once again it will be a straight line.
Ann
Wouldn't you know it! I was puttering around today getting all the last minute things done, worked out in the front a bit and guess what I found in the back yard? Yup she did it again folks. Good thing she had already left with the Thursday dog walker! I have used an entire package of remay.
Anyway it has been cloudy and threatening looking all day and just after I came in at about 4pm it started - thunder and lightening overhead and then - of course - HAIL!
Probably didnt last more than a minute and can't see much damage except maybe the front step pots and then heavy rain - still raining so I have not gone out to check.
Guess I should have checked the weather forecast before I turned on the watering system for this morning.
Pic was taken thru the screen door - those big circles are not hail!

You're lucky Carol; I was thinking of you as I saw the storm gathering. I'm not so lucky up here; we got a fair dump of pea-sized hail. All my canna lilies are shredded to coleslaw, most of my Hostas are damaged (dumb of me to grow them without any tree protection), and lots of other plants have leaves knocked off, etc. Rats.
:(
Joanne
Well I was sure saying my prayers!
Sure is a White Winter Wonderland out here......... and to think, in 1989 it snowed every month of the year in Calgary.......glad I didn't live here then lol
My front yard is ok, no hail damage, but I should look @ my side & back yard.
One major plus for the cool temps - my Mock Orange is soooooooooo fragrant that even I can smell it, and it's LOVERLY! mmmmmmmmmmm (I have such a wonky sense of smell, I usually can't smell a durn thing, but I sure got a whiff of the Mock Orange as soon as I opened the car door when I got home!)
I have another Mock Orange in the back yard, and I'm looking out the window as I type - it looks OK........ phew! Now, to look @ the side yard, and my Hostas!
Fancyvan - glad there's no perm damage re: hail, and ur right - good thing Fancy wasn't home......what's remay?
YIKERDOODLE !!!! Oh my .. I feel so bad about your Cannas Jo-anne !!! I'd be sick if anything happened to mine .. so much invested time.
You ladies certainly do get MORE than your fair share of HAIL !!
It is sitting at FIFTY F here this morning !! Last night it was down in the mid 40s .. what gives fer sure!! DH vegetable garden is stagnant .. except for potatoes which have gone CHERNOBYL on him .. I had a friend over yesterday and I was showing her his garden and we were both quite shocked by how well the potatoes were coming along. DH has planted something called a 'finger potato' this year .. it's a 'Heritage crop' (old stuff) :-)
Have been having a wee chuckle on the Dave and Bullwinkle forum .. if you haven't been there you should make a point of going .. I have added my name to the list for a visit from Dave and Bullwinkle .. even though I think I'm kinda too late ..
More company today .. off to make some muffins ..
Enjoy your day/weekend
~M~
As an update .. the FURNACE IS ON !!!! Temp outside 48 F !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
UGgggggggggggggggggggggggg
~M~
That's horrible!!! Is this normal for up there? I'll be thinking warm thoughts for you today.
--Ginny
So sorry about the hail! And the cold weather in TB. Hope it warms up.
We got home late last night and I'm operating on less than adequate sleep as I had difficulty going to sleep. Haven't yet done a garden tour.
Ann
Oh my goodness guys, how terrible for you all...sure hope not the same at home or I'll be freeking when I arrive..will leave tomorrow morning early so that I can take numerous breaks and still get home late Saturday and have Sunday to recoup..today is a 'craft day' of sorts..lol am sure we'll enjoy all we do..waiting for Judy to rise and shine and we'll go off for breakfast..calling for 90's today then add on humidity..
Feet are well rested after doing that walk in Chicago all day yesterday..can't get over the beauty of downtown and all it's gardens/parks/water features..amazing..will post some photo's when I get home..gab later..enjoy your day...
My furnace was turned on late yesterday afternoon too! Never looked at the temp - just knew I was darn cold!
Susan remay is a type of finely woven (?) plant cover - shades, protects, water can get thru but not insects.
Got to get dressed and get out in the yard to check out for damage etc - 8am this morning is the deadline for having everything in a state of readiness to be judged - from then until Sunday night! Just looking out the windows does not look like much hail damage.
Wonder if I dare remove the gates to the veggie garden? Guess Fancy wont be allowed out alone in the yard this weekend!
For those of you in need of baby pictures, I've posted a few of Leila on Coffee..
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/875413/#new Since this thread is getting a bit long, I'll just give you the link.
Ann
Hmmmmm .. I can't seem to open the link .. could just be ME though as we are on the CUSP of a pretty bad storm ..
Ginny .. we do not 'normally' get temps like the ones we have had today .. which is why I had Central Air installed .. WRONG !!!!! Have friends and relations BLAMING me for this cool weather LoL
Take care on your trip home Betty !!! Looking forward to your pics .. :-)
Better batten down the hatches .. praying for NO HAIL !!!!
Take care
~M~
I just tried it and it worked. But you have to scroll a bit to find them. Alternatively, go to Parking Lot and select the thread for July 11.
AWwwwwwwwwwwwww .. I got it to work !! How cute can she be !!!!! And NEVER a'porker' .. maybe a cherub ...
Wonderful pics ...
Round ONE of the thunderstorm is gone .. Round 2 sholud be happening soon ..
I am in everyones 'poopoo book' here as I am cleaning the stove .. and YES .. I know it is smelly as the kak heats up and turns to ash .. but .. that's life (and a run away Rhubarb strawberry pie) I cleaned the spill over immediately .. but JEEZ .. some residue just stuck on .. only another hour left .. am going to turn on the vent fan in a bit ...
Take care !!
~M~
2 pics of "my SLIGHT boo boo' !!
I planted 4 tomato plants in amongst these beautiful mauve poppies .. WELL .. the poppies are NEVER as prolific as this !! So .. this afternoon .. some of the poppies will be hiked out to give the tomatoes back their sun (an my Azalea).
Have NO idea on the name of said Poppies .. but they sure a gorgeous .. and I am willing to share seeds if you'd like .. That said .. a word of warning .. they tend to like ANYTHING to grow in .. the cracks of a sidewalk .. other flower beds and pots .. good thing they're purdy !!
~M~
Chernobyl, eh? lol
should send a pic of them to my cousin Cher LOL
Well .. the Poppies did not get culled today .. mainly because the wind tried to blow TBay into Lake Superior !!
When you live on 'treed property' you really worry about BIG wind, and today was no exception !!
LoL .. the term 'Chernobyl' with regards to plants takes a bit of getting used to .. but suits some to a 'T' !!
Off to shower and BED !!!!
~M~
Judging of my yard is finished - 6 classes yesterday and two today. Of course they will still be judging until tomorrow evening, just mine is done which is nice since I get the yard back to myself again earlier than expected and dont have to keep roaming around weeding and deadheading! If the judges come in while you are in the yard you have to leave immediately ( including the dogs!) and not speak to them!
It has been a really nice weekend for them, not too hot but nice and sunny.
Wont know any results until Monday.
I bet that's a relief of one sort Fancy .. but now the 'anticipatory excitement' begins. I'm sure you'll be a winner :-)
Wind blew here all night .. some rain as well .. and the wind continues to blow .. it wouldn't be so bad .. but I have several windchimes .. the largest .. a stainless steel tubular one .. is about 2 to 3 feet in length .. usually the soft sweet sounds emanating from it in a light wind are very nice to listen to .. but when the winds blow as hard as they have been .. it's BREAK OUT THE BUNGEE CORD .. and I wrap it so as not to have to listen to it clash and clang ..
Off to walk Lilly .. at least the mosquitoes won't be bad !!
~M~
My fingers are crossed for you Fancy - good luck!
Back from holidays, enjoyed Chicago and the DG friends...tired today though...will be back to post later...
Good luck Fancyvan
WB Betty .. nice to know you're back safe and sound :-)
~M~
