What's Happening in YOUR neighborhood today #5
HAHAHAhahaha .. I think I should take the STICKER offa the planter pot !!!
~M~
My first thought was Phlox but if as it seems there are 4 petals on the flowers and the leaf edges are rough then is is Dames Rocket (Hersperis) (Phlox flower has 5 petals and smooth leaf edge)
"M" not sure what they are but I see them all along the roadside up here, deeper colors of rose/pink and also white...have never known the name either...
Doc appt. again this a.m. - must drink some yuk and head out..be back later..
Greetings from Vancouver. Got here last evening. Staying in a B& B near Commercial Drive until Sunday and then moving into a downtown hotel for a conference.
Ann
Have a great time on your trip Ann .. enjoy the warmth and flowers ..
Thanks to everyone who named my plant .. I forgot to mention this morning .. that when I took the pic the flash flashed so .. the colour is kinda washed out a bit ...
Like the name "Dames Rocket" .. have never heard of it before .. but I do think I saw in growing wild and in abundance along the roadside in Minnesota .. mixed in with the lupins .. I just like it cuz it's purdy ..
Carol yours looks great in your garden ..
Have decided that reading sounds better than weeding so grabin my book and heading out !!

Just had a minor heart attack moment...it's been really hot here today, and that often seems to create ideal thunderstorm conditions. Heard the plop-plop of hail and raced outside to see what the heck was going on. Sure enough, pea-sized ice pelting down, so I zoomed around and covered my still-not-in-the-ground wintersowing with frost cloth, and then stood there wondering what else I could do. Luckily the hail turned quickly to large raindrops and then abruptly stopped. Now the sun is out again. This is gut wrenching everytime this happens because there's no way to save/cover all my plants, just too many of them. Well, thankfully no major damage this time...whew!
Joanne
I had the same heart attack Jo all my pots are sitting out on the patio! Sheets etc for covers are in the porch just in case(usually out in the shed) I stood anxiously at the door and out on the step listening to that noise which sounds so much like hail but it didnt happen here . Phew!
Wow - yeah - "plop, plop, fizz, fizz"........ never know if it's gonna rain, or hail!!
Glad it didn't last long on this "first day of Stampedede"!
Did anyone go to the Parade?
Hi there Dame's rocket it is MarrilynneS-- As soon as the blooms have finished enough for you, I would recommend that you cut them right back to the ground , and not let them go to seed . I did one year and was very sorry that I did. Don't you just lov e the scent from them. Mine have been finished for about a week , and from a distance they looked like the clustered bellflower that I have blooming now. sandra
Hail is scary stuff .. so damaging .. glad you didn;t sustain any MAJOR flower damage ..
I'll follow your advice and cutback the Rocket when it's done Sandra. As I mentioned .. last year I had maybe 2 stalks .. this year I have 5 .. I have it planted in with some Bee Balm .. am beginning to think Bee Balm is a 'Bi Annual' .. it didn't flower last year and is taking its dear sweet time this year ..
Weather wise we are in for another stellar day here in Thunder Bay :-) Am up bright and early to go with my landscaper friend to help her water her gardens at the cemetery. She has 30+ to do. Drives a Kubota tractor with a water tank on the back .. kind of a slick set up .. however .. I feel we'll both pretty much be 'mosquito bait'.
Everyone enjoy your Saturday :-)
~M~
Morning all, it's sunshine here, calling for a perfect weekend weather wise...sorry everyone about your gardens and the hail, we were slated for much the same Thursday night but it passed us by, must have headed west...
Beebalm- love it..not sure about the bi-annual though, I haven't enough of it, must get more..
Calgary Stampede..one year I'll get to see it...looks pretty amazing when you watch it on t.v.
Busy day today, off to paint a muskoka chair..all lillies..should look pretty with a smaller table nearby and footstool..yet another place to sit but who sits..lol..will show you a photo tomorrow once I put it together...
enjoy your day..
Let me know when you are coming Betty - free room and board here as long as you dont mind the extra food group ( animal hair)
You are a sweetheart Fancyvan...
Well I accomplished far more than I thought today..did my Muskoka Chair and had hoped of getting it all together and placed along with table and footstool on front lawn but had to finished the project I started Thursday/Friday night at my sister-in-laws...did her living room floor with floating floor and tonight did the hallway..project accomplished..lol..
So cute to have men come and ask me for help and to borrow MY tools...how things have changed...
So tomorrow morning early a.m. I know who will put her chair together..
Will share a photo of the back and will post again once I put it together...
Tired so will not respond to all your posts but will do so tomorrow when I'm lounging..and that will be the day!
Betty I just changed my mind about free room and board - you can paint my Muskoka Chair!
Spent most of the day weeding and deadheading and triming, Grow _Jo and Eleanor ( a sheltie foster mom friend) came over to help and we pretty much finished the front yard, this evening I have been starting to do the back. Last time I went into the competition I weeded practically every day for weeks. This time I figured that was pretty silly so I left all the weeding ( except what I would normally do) till the last week!
Tomorrow I am working at Lougheed House so not much weeding time until evening when the mosquitos are out!
5 more days until judging starts - lots to do last minute like tidying the shed, putting away all the pots lying around, weeding the sidewalks and patios, cleaning the fountains etc. etc. Well at least the weather is cooperating.
Boom Boom Boom .. Thunder Bay is under a SEVERE Thunder Storm warning at present .. I can hear the thunder off in the distance .. also a chance of large hail AND high winds .. going outside to try and see what I can do to maybe prevent lots of flower damage ..
LOVE that chair Betty .. just beeootiful :-)
Off and runnin !!
~M~
o that's a beauty betty.
Betty - your chair is wonderful!
Joanne
Rain and thunder lasted perhaps half an hour .. planted more Canna Lilies and am now off to get some COLOUR for one of my perennial beds .. it never seems to end ..
HOT here fer sure .. always know we've hit 25+C when the dreaded 'SPRUCE BEETLES' start to dive bomb ya .. boy can they hang a bite on you !!! DH bought me a 'ZAPPER' it looks kinda like a badminton racket and it has batteries in it .. works pretty well on the flying beasties .. course .. I tend to RUN like the dickens when I see one comin my way .. they like to torment me when I'm hanging out clothes on the line.
I best be on my way .. still thinking I;d like to do a chair like yours Betty .. but am thinking 'stickmen' painted on'em would look kinda goofy :-)
Enjoy everyone
~M~
You can do it 'M'..Fancyvan, will pack up my brushes and paint..won't take but 4 or 5 hours..lol..
Got the chair together, decided to paint a few slats on the footstool and table as to match...
Starting to loose ground here, lol and I still have a chair to finish by tonight..need to take it 'bye/bye' when I got to Illinois...so better leave and get at it..
Now don't you look the part..so pretty and pristine...they are lucky to have you...
Tres chic fancyvan. I luv your costumes for the Loughheed House. Especially the deadly hats!!
Oh my god, fancyvan, you look so demure! Your costume is adorable.
Joanne
LOL Jo. You can still see the twinkle in her eye if you look close ^_^
Have to be sure our costumer never sees that pic - the hat should be pulled further down over my eyes and more to the side! She is very particular!
ahhhhh the gangster demure look was very trendy in those days I guess.
OHMIGOSH !!! Fancy .. you're wearing a 'CHEMISE' .. I would suggest you NOT google (image) that :-) I love'em .. very demure !!
Betty .. that chair set is knock down wonderful!! trust me .. I haven't an artistic bone in me bod !!! I can write reports and articles with my eyes shut though :-)
Has been a HOT one here in Thunder Bay today .. hit 37C with the humidex .. so happy to have the A/C.
My picks at the greenhouse were pink and red petunias .. and some Lobelia and Dianthus .. slim pickins !!! The bed does look brighter now ..
Time to walk Lilly ..
~M~
Betty - you could go into business painting those chairs. I love it.
fancyvan - nice change into the 20's costume. Will have to come and see you sojme time. Unfortunately, we have no relatives left in Calgary. They are all gone or moved out to the coast; but sometimes DH gets to travel there on business. But he doesn't always give me enough warning to plan to go along.
Looks like a nice day here in Vancouver. Stores open soon. Will hit The Bay - I LOVE the downtown Bay in Vancouver - it's a real old fashioned department store. And from the Bay I can easily catch the skytrain out to the Commercial Drive area where DD lives and visit with her and new granddaughter. We were staying in a B&B in that area, but moved downtown yesterday as DH has a couple of conferences running concurrently.
Hope you all have a nice day.
Ann
Ann you just need to do a stopover on your way to or from Vancouver! Lots of DGers around here to visit with.
Thats what Ginny(Inanda) did this year she goes from Winnipeg to Victoria every year to see family and this year stopped off to teach a workshop - cost an extra $50.00 I think.
M it is definitely NOT a chemise!!!!!!!!!!
Actually they are called one hour dresses, a sewing system developed around 1926 so women at home could make a dress without a lot of fuss and fabric and complicated patterns.
I am BAGGED .. got called in to work at 2am .. I usually say no .. but the patient is someone I have 'specialed' a few times over the past month .. she is now free of pain , her battle with cancer sure did take a toll on her young family.
I fully intended to go to bed when I got home around noon .. but .. I'm wired and tired at the same time .. so will go out and putter around until I calm down ..
Hmmmmmmmm .. Fancy .. I used to have a school uniform with a dropped waist like that .. I thought they called it a chemise .. all I know is most of the girls at the school hated them !!!!
Laughing re the ONE HOUR dress !! It'd be more like ONE month for me !!!!
~M~
Well they are not exactly elegant! Chemise - technically speaking, or shift is an undergarment! They are however cool!
The "one hour" dress reminds me of a log cabin quilt I sewed. The instructions in Family Circle magazine said "Sew it in a weekend". I think it took me 20 years.
Yeah the gals here who made them say it took them way more than one hour too !
Don't you just love those patterns that say 'easy as 1-2-3..' lol...it's a challenge, but look how pretty Fancyvan looks in it...
Have tomorrow off for another hospital visit..almost know the attendants' names..had catscan Friday and had to drink the most awful yuk and now I'm having some other test that I have to drink almost as much..it's a white oily chalk, keep wanting to upchuck it..then of course another bottle tomorrow and then I think just prior to the test yet another..won't make it, know I won't..I'm finished for tonight and I'm trying to settle my tummy down...
Boss gave me Wednesday off so I'll be leaving tomorrow aft. after the hospital..hoping to get to Windsor and spend the night with a cousin, get up early and trek right through to Chicago where I'll meet Judy and Liz..Liz arrived this afternoon, checked the Best/Worse and What did I learn today? thread but think those 2 are partying..lol..that's what happens when friends meet for the very first time..
Well, must go do some packing...talk in the morning..
Hope you've all enjoyed you day..
Got heavy downpour of rain at 5 pm , just before the S.S.M. Hort Soc. garden tour. Made for an even more humid time during the tour. Then come home to see it also bent over double my 5 and 6 ft. foxgloves that were beautiful this afternoon. Too bad, my sister arrives on sat. and I thought this year she would see them.
MarrilynneS My Bee Balm has not started blooming yet either. I think it will be a little later this year like so many other things that require the heat. My delphiniums are half the size they were last year, and are just making their buds. Last year they had been in full bloom for a week by the middle of july.
Talk about one person' s weed being someone else's find-- A couple of the Hort. soc. ladies came over after our tour tonight and went nuts over my Chameleon plant --They wanted it for a bog garden and for their ponds. I have to yank so much out every year that I was glad to fill a couple of pots for them. and good riddance to it.
We are supposed to get 15 cm of rain tonight according to the weather channel and then a cool down to the high teens. Very strange year. I am at work tonight and have back-up if power goes off , so atleast til it cools off I am in ac. Time to get back to work and check on my inmates. sandra
Love the "one-hour" dress, Fancy! So demure, indeed!
btw - I used to be Tallulah41, now am Tallulah_B
Still Susan, though :-)
