I have an Sunset Coneflower with this 'stray' bloom. It's petals remind me of fanfare gaillardia- trumpet like. While trying to see if it was an identified variety I ran across mention of deformations caused by Yellow Asters and I'd like to know if I should yank it or enjoy it's uniqueness. Thanks! Megan
Is this a mutant or yellow asters disease?
Does anyone know if this is dangerous or not? Or some as yet undiscovered variety that could make me millions??? :) (joking!)
It doesn't look quite like most of the pics I've seen of aster yellows, most of the ones I've seen there are leaf-like things growing out of the center of the flower as well as deformed petals. But it's honestly not something I'm overly familiar with. Have you had any symptoms at all on the leaves? "Reverse chlorosis" on the leaves is a common symptom--the area around the leaf veins looking yellow while other parts of the leaves remain green. Unless you have other symptoms or someone comes along and says for sure it is aster yellows, I'd just keep an eye on it and see if you start seeing more weird flowers or other symptoms, if you do then get rid of it.
