Harry Lauder (,or, Contorted Filburt)

Reno, NV

I need help from you guys out there, I finally bought a Harry Lauder and I was wondering if I can plant it in full sun. When I say 'full sun' I really do mean it as I live in Reno, NV (over 300 days worth of full sun per year). Plus, its hot and dry in the summer. I really love this little sucker, but before I move him from his pot in the shade (might I add he really loves his black Home Depot pot in the shade) into the full sun I really want to know what the deal is. According to the tag he (or 'she'- have to be PC) likes part shade, but according to Dave's, it should do fine in full sun. Which brings me to the sun- it is pretty warm here in the Biggest Little City. Before you advise me on part shade, let me tell you that I am limited on that kind of space in my small yard, and unfortunately, all my Japanese Maples have staked their claims well ahead of poor old Harry! Please help me guys!!

Thanks,
John

I love the Harry Lauder. But, I too have only full sun and it's not making some of my recent plantings too happy. Summer, with the high temps and humidity so early haven't helped. If you haven't had unusual weather for your area it might be just fine. I searched other resources for this tree/shrub and they all said full sun to partial shade.

Thank you very much for your response tcinmb. I think I will chance it in the sun, if I see him not doing well I will move him appropriately. Thanks again!

How is Mr. Lauder doing???

I bought one once. It was gorgeous. Before committing to a huge hole, I simply placed it in a 3/4 sun spot.

Within a few days the leaf tips were burnt. We have sun like you, here in Texas. blazing hot and it can be in the 100's solid, for pretty much two months of summer.

I then picked a spot that gets morning sun until around noon, and it recovered and liked it there.

It only survived a year, though. I later found out that they like acidic soil. Both our soil and our water supply are alkaline, so it was doomed from the start. I guess I killed it slowly, every time I watered...They sure are pretty, though.

I hope yours is doing ok. I am just concerned that even if it could tolerate it in full sun eventually, it could probably do so better if it had acclimated to it, not just put right into it, in the hottest part of summer.

So, how is it doing for you, so far?

I haven't quite gotten Harry in the ground yet (I know- I'm a bad father), but he is doing great in his pot for now. I finished my pond and waterfalls lately, maybe I will post a pic or two of that along with Harry once he finds his way into his special spot! I'll keep you guys posted!

Bump. How is Harry doing?

Hopefully, you have a plant that is NOT grafted. If it's grafted, you have to be very vigilant about removing the extremely vigorous suckers that will arise like demons every summer and shade out the desirable twisted growth. Contorted filberts (a cultivar of European filberts) are hardy from Zones 4 - 9, pH adaptable, love full sun to light shade. As they grow, thinning can emphasize the unique branching structure. Flower arrangers love the branches.

Harry is now in the ground with full sun until about 3 in the afternoon. He's not liking it too much, but he does have new growth. I think he's just grumpy but he'll get over it. Little bit of leaf burn- I think he'll make it though... I'll post some pics soon.

Please do... Been waiting a year to see Mr. Lauder !! lol

tcinmb- thanks for hangin' in there, sorry I've been so late in getting him popped into his spot. Luckily, he's got an 8 ft. Vanderwulf (Pinus Flexilis) to shade him at about 3 in the afternoon. The real heats comin' so keep 'em crossed! I'll put picks on soon!

See you again!
