We are in a new yard this planting season so am discovering new gardening challenges. . .
Because of its location, half the little plot gets sun in the am until 12ish, then the other half gets just the opposite. I have put in heuchera, coleus, nierembergia, snapdragon, blue lobelia and hakonechloa (sp?) grass. Nothing has died, but it's all just kind of sitting there in separate clumps not doing anything. Do maples do something to the soil (otherwise, the soil looks pretty good)? The root system of the tree causing a problem for other plants (though I thought I hacked it up and made room when I planted)? The dandelions are doing great and there are iris there that did their thing before the tree leafed out. should i just mulch it and enjoy the tree?
Pardon my 'thoroughness', just wanted to give you as much info as possible!

I think you probably just need to give things a little time, it sounds like you didn't plant things that long ago. Planting in the garden is a little stressful for plants, and they'll often spend some time working on getting their roots going before they start thinking about top growth, flowers, etc. I don't grow most of those so I'm not too familiar with their moisture requirements, but as far as I know most of them should do OK even if there are tree roots, I really don't think that's your problem. The other thing I would check is that the more shade loving plants are in the half of the bed that gets only morning sun, and the others that like more sun are in the half that gets PM sun.
