July in Omaha - too late to start growing veggies?

Bellevue, NE(Zone 4b)

Hi! We are buying a home south of Omaha the beginning of July (Air Force!) and I was going to wait till next year to learn how to grow veggies (I have done herbs and perennials before), but now with all the flooding in Iowa (we have family there) and the already high food costs I was wondering if it will be too late to start growing any veggies. There are already several garden beds around the house. What will grow that late in the year? How would I get started (indoors, pots?) so I don't kill the plants from the heat before they really get rooted? I do know that the next door neighbor is retired and grew up a farm boy, so I think he might be able to give me more pointers once I get started and we get to know him better. Thanks so much!

In Wichita just a little south of you we are about to put in our second planting of pickles, tomatoes, squash and eggplant in the middle of July. For the second planting we put the seeds straight into the ground. I just put in our second planting of broclli. I am told it is to late for starting peppers, pumpkin, watermelon and peas. Other probably know better.
