Help! We moved into a home last summer and I am trying to landscape and add to previous owner's perennials. In the walkway area leading to our home (it separates the wrap around porch and the grass), approx. 5 wide and 20 feet long, we have misc. plants, shrubs and a wood chip base, etc. - it's decently landscaped. The previous owners planted creeping phlox close to the sidewalk and our front porch. It has spread to an area approx. 2 feet x 3.5 feet. It is a prime "flower area" with Hostas in back in the shaded area. After my beautiful creeping phlox flowered, I m left with a nice green carpet but no color for the area which is part sun. It looks odd. It is crying out for some color!! Can I plant something right behind it? Or, perhaps right in the green phlox carpet if it blooms later than the phlox? Thanks!
creeping phlox
If you don't really like the looks of the phlox in your garden, you could move all or part of it elsewhere. Creeping phlox isn't hard to move. I have azaleas under my bay window with creeping phlox as a ground cover around them and it looks nice even when the phlox isn't in bloom. If you want to add some shrubs, just dig out a large enough section of phlox and plant the shrubs. The phlox will move back in pretty quickly. I haven't tried growing flowers in creeping phlox so don't know for sure what would happen to the flowers.
