DAILY PICS VOL. 118

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

Quoting:
(probably Pied Cormorants)

I can only see one Pied Cormorant there (spot the white breast!), towards the top right; suspect most of them are Little Black Cormorant.

Margaret you are so funny :) Fantastic shot of the cormorants.

Marlton, NJ

Beautiful shots Al! I love the sounds of the House Wren!

Nice pics nanny, I've never seen my Eastern Towhee again.

Beautiful sight Margaret!

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

I'm so unhappy with my cardinals. I watched these Black Swallowtail caterpillars grow up and start to form chrysalis and then the cardinals came and ate every one. They were relentless. They wouldn't even fly away when I went out and yelled at them. Must have been pretty tasty. I guess that's nature.

Here's a Green Heron.

Pelle, they don't seem to come to the yard on regular basis here, just pop in time to time. But there are lots of them around here!!

From my walk on sunday

Hummingbird up on the wire...it is amazing how many I spot now along the way!

I have been able to get a little closer to the phoebes...but they are hard for my camrea to capture well with their coloring and the lighting. Always seem to be in some shade or glaring sun!

This Bald Eagle is almost directly over an active (been active for 14 years that I know of)
Osprey nest. I'm standing under a Great Blue Herons nest that was wiped out by an Eagle earlier this month. I'm looking almost directly at the sun so the pics aren't very good.

This Osprey made quick work out of chasing the Eagle away.

Funny how birds pick on other birds. I saw an eagle mantled in a field the other day.

A few years a go white pelicans were a novelty here

Margaret, Jackdaws are said to take shiny objects to their nest, they are intelligent. I found an article on them, seems they have trouble rearing all their young. Maye I should get some wild bird food! That's a lot of Cormorants, interesting shot!

Nice Pelicans Al!

Lincoln, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

I seem to have a few damaged Great Tits, apart from the one which has missing lower yellow feathers one stopped by today which has one leg and a patch of missing feathers. It flew off when it saw me so I don't know how it copes with clinging. Another I got a pic of later which I haven't downloaded yet has a bald patch around one eye. I'm wondering what's happened to them all!

No pic but I saw an Indigo Bunting in a tree in my yard today. I don't see these often, so I am happy!! He flew when I went in for the camera of course.

Definitely been taking lessons from one, though!!

Wallaby, I read the hyperlink about the jackdaws. Interesting. You can see the intelligence in their eyes.

With your one-legged Great Tit, if the missing leg has happened recently, there is always a chance of infection setting in. However, if it is an old and healed wound, it will probably cope quite well. We've had a Grey Butcherbird visiting us for supplementary feeds for well over two years. One of its legs has been rendered completely useless - I suspect it may have been grabbed by a Magpie - its right leg is kind of out from and backwards from its body. It still has circulation and the foot on the useless leg can still open and close, but because it's pointing skywards, it cannot use it to perch. We contemplated catching it and taking it to an avian veterinarian, but decided against this because of the stress it would experience for what may possibly be an adverse outcome. If it was clearly struggling, we'd risk it. We have no idea how its feathers and beak remain in such good condition as it is unable to preen normally. Resiliant little thing. I'll try to get a photo of it showing its bung leg.

There were a lot more Cormorants than that. They were spooked by the banjos

Nice shots, sybil. I wonder if there had been more than one baby Loon to begin with. Oh, and sybil, you are the prettiest of them all.

Gorgeous Pelicans, bigcityal. Resin will correct me if I've got my information wrong, but Australia has only one species of Pelican, named, surprisingly the "Australian Pelican".

Northumberland, United Kingdom(Zone 9a)

A local lake near here had a regular visiting Mediterranean Gull, which had just one leg, with a broken stump where the other leg should have been. It was there for several years, and always got on fine; it got nick-named 'Monopod'.

Correct! ;-) Bigcityal's pics are of American White Pelican, which is fairly similar to yours but with less black in the wings, and a white (not black) tail.

Late morning here at the moment!

Margaret - there are a great number of Bald Eagles nesting near this particular lake and yes, I can well imagine that there may have been other Loon babies. The soft, parental - almost cooing sounds the adults were making with the little one were so sweet to hear; this in sharp contrast to the screaming they do when alerted to danger. A couple of weeks back we watched an Eagle circling a Loon family - so vulnerable.

They lay 1-3 eggs, most often 2. So there might well have been another, but not definitely so. The chicks would be at some risk from eagles (not a lot though, as they're very good swimmers underwater), rather more risk from large fish, and human activities such as getting caught in fishing nets, and pollution.

I think the Great Tit's leg or lack of is an old injury, there's looks to be no fleshy bits showing!

This is the one with the bare patch on it's head, maybe they all got attacked by a Magpie or something when still in the nest. It's strange to have so many with different problems.

boojum, I am find ing the buntings and phoebes the most frustrating. I think the buntings are even taunting me!! String me along and the fly off just in the nick of time or get in a location that I can not photograph them well!

That seems to be the way of it with bird photography, nanny. When I review my pics there always seems to be one that surprises me that it turned out well and of course there are ALL those that are just awful! But I'm really getting into the photography thing.
Here's a link to some of my pictures. Feel welcome to look through them when you have the time.
