When should you plant shallots? is it too late for this season?
They are great in salads.
shallots - right time of the year to plant?
I'm probably not the one to answer this question as it is my first season with shallots. I planted mine last Fall around Sept/Oct and they are ready to harvest now. It looks like a good crop and I will probably do the same this year. From what I have read, it seams a Fall planting or an early Spring planting is the best time.
rrez is right about the planting times for shallots, too late this year in summer but autumn is next time for you to give it a go, instead of shallots right now, try some of the salad onions, we call them salad onions as they grow in about 6 weeks as do tender lettuce leaves, they are the small onions that you also chop up the green tops and add to your salads, pencil thin tops. good luck. We call those spring onions, or green onions; I like to throw those in soups at the last minute too, like Thai soups or even spice up those Ramen noodle soups. I planted those in the spring; I dont know why I didnt think of shallots .
