lacey rose leaves starting in May/\.

Kamuela, HI

How do I control whatever is eating my rose leaves and turning them into lace?

Ayrshire Scotland, United Kingdom

Sounds like earwigs eating your foliage, or maybe a caterpillar of some kind, you would be best going out at night to try find out what it is as the earwigs feed in the evenings and hide either in the foliage or in a dark dry place in the day time, if earwigs, set up a trap to catch them, like a small flower pot half filled with shredded paper or straw, stick a garden cane into the soil beside the roses and turn this pot upside down onto the cane, the earwigs will go into the straw for shelter in the morning, this is when you go outside with a bucket of boiling water and shake the straw so the bugs fall into the water to die, if caterpillars, you get gloves on if squeemish and pick them off and stamp on them or what ever murder you fancy. good luck. I suspect Japanese beetles, I remember those symptoms from my mom's rosebushes when I was growing up and it was always Japanese beetles that were to blame. They love roses and this is the right time of year for them to be putting in an appearance. Here's a link, if you scroll down a little bit there's a picture of leaves showing the JB damage http://www.hillgardens.com/jap-betl.htm

They have japanese beetles in Hawaii? You need to put those geckos to work! :)

Oops...I have a bad habit of not always looking at where people are from!

I wasn't being sarcastic, ecrane. I really have no clue if they do or don't have japanese beetles although I thought I remembered that they don't exist past the Mississippi River. Is that right? So does that mean Hawaii doesn't have them?

Actually they are Chinese Rose Beetles and my grandmother raised her roses in a large screened area. to protect them from the rose beetle, in 1898 in Honolulu on the island of Oahu, HI.
Have found Ortho's systemic Insecticide mixed with water good for 7 to 10 days.
Then spray plant again.

Well "Plant Freak" I only joined in the past few months so could not reply sooner.
Here is a hint for you......do some research for your plants, there is a lot of help
with your County Exten. people and the library if you don't mind reading.
Aloha and good luck.
