Has everyone gone on vacation???

Glenview, IL

Good Morning Betty and All!

Just got back into town last night. The weekend weather was just gorgous.

...I am sure you have all heard of the Flooding in Wisconsin. Well our cottage is now far from the Dells. We had to take several reroutes as bridges were completly under water or on the verge of cresting.

The water is up about 10inches. which means everyone's piers are underwater.
Jacob and Steve rescued our pier landings 10 in all were floating down the lake.
Thats about 60 worth of wood per section! And thank goodness we went when we did, the boat was floating by a thread. Some very kind neighbor came and tied the boat directly to the pier frame. Otherwise it would have gone on a float ride too. We did loose a canoe. So figure someone rescued it. Looked all over but didn't find it. The cottage is up on a hill so thankfully no damage to it.

...So it was a bummer day on Saturday because i wasn't able to go to roundup.
I won't drive highways and my drivers didn't want to search for routes. So, I ended up staying put and pouted all day. LOL...Actually I got to work on a project I have been working on for a little bit. It's a for Liz birthday so can't show you yet.
LOL...speaking of, Yay...You finally got your RWB swap from Betty!! It's gorgeous...Betty, Liz called me a Brat for know all this time...Hehehe, couldn't wait to tell her too.

Well...big wig is in office today so will cme back in a little bit...
Got to get busy.

Woohoo 3weeks from today!

Victoria Harbour, ON

Omg Judy, thank goodness for the cottage being so high..so many are being affected by the weather..won't need a boat to visit you will I? lol
Sorry you lost hte canoe..

Here I just posted somewhere that it was sunny, looking outside and the sky is black..bad weather brewing..

Something for Liz..lucky girl..and yes, her birthday is coming...Liz I'll not take chance of post office again so will bring my birthday gift for you with me to Judy's..

Funny sort of day yesterday, was lovely out, washed everything on back deck - all pretty again..I too pouted most of the day Judy..I was in a few other swaps, those I have the names for I'll send out, those I do not have names for I've contacted the organizer and said I'd not participate..love them all dearly but one takes the time to make/create and send it out only to have them arrive damaged or broke...last 3 swaps the same and I did pack it well..disheartening for the person receiving as well as for me..

Sooo will keep pouting.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Not sure if I mentioned that my sister Sharon who breeds American Eskimo dogs and has top breeding had made attempts to breed one of your dogs with a male from USA and it didn't take, that's what they told her..so last week the dog was not feeling the best, she took it to the vets and yep, it took..so she had dog shows in and had to have a vet look after her while she was away...

For those of you who have never seen her show dogs (I've posted this before) I'll re-post

Aren't they the cutest

Richmond, VA(Zone 7a)

Beautiful dogs!!! Oh, and I can smell the puppy breath!!!!

Our puppy is due to be born around the 24th so we are keeping our fingers crossed that there will be 2 females in the litter. The owner has dibs on the first one and we get another. I will be up in NY when she is due so hopefully DH will check the email for any notices while I am gone.

Only working 4 days this week. Taking Friday off and heading to the mountains (Luray, Va) with DH and kids for the weekend. This was supposed to be just the two of us but with my mom getting over her hospital stay, we didn't want her worrying about the kids. We're going to go canoeing when we get up there and we're taking the inner tubes, rope and an anchor so we can just "chill" out in the river behind the house. Should be fun!!

I'll chat w/ y'all later.
J

Victoria Harbour, ON

Jeannine, how is your mom doing? Hopefully much better..
The kids will behave I'm sure especially as they are joining you on YOUR vacation with DH...

Sharon has 5 girls/2 boys..not all are spoken for but am sure because of their breeding it won't be long before they are..big undertaking..

You LOL are a glutten for punishment, yet another 'puppy' how on earth did you get DH to agree?

Is the fencing in the back yard helping keeping Murphy out of the gardens?

Crozet, VA

Thanks everyone for posting pictures. I always enjoy them. What gorgeous dogs your sister has Betty. They are some very tiny puppies. Please share future photos that she shares with you as they grow.

I am getting ready to make a couple of loaves of banana bread. I am using frozen bananas that I have been saving. I hope it turns out okay.

This morning I passed a nursery that I have to go by when going in to town. At the very corner of their lot I saw fully grown Cleome plants in pots. I saw them last week and again today. I made a note to stop in this week and see how much they cost. I waited too late to plant the Cleome seed that I have and for some reason I feel that I need that in my yarden this year. I have heard that they can sometimes get out of hand in terms of spreading. Do any of you have experience with them? and have any growing tips to share?

Have a good day everyone.

Ruby

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Ruby,

All I know about Cleomes is that they self-seed prolifically. That means--next year, there will be many more in your bed. You can pull them up and re-plant them---You can just pull them up--or--you can let them all grow and bloom. They look so pretty in a grouping!
The plants themselves do not spread--as by roots or any other way--just by seeding.

Happy Gardening! Gita

Victoria Harbour, ON

Have a couple Ruby but only since last year so not sure how well they are doing...yes, aren't the puppies adorable, almost want to say 'I'll take one' knock myself silly...

Now I don't know if you read Ruby but I found 2 plants at the nursery, one was about 2' and the other 3' castor bean plants, so of course had to purchase them..don't think they were costly $5.99 each...but at the same time I purchased a couple of flats and was putting them in containers, so thought as the castor bean seeds didn't grow I'd use the container, as I emptied the pot low and behold I think all the seeds were growing, small growth about 1/2 inch but growing, so I've planted them and lets see what happens...lol..never say die right?

Victoria Harbour, ON

Gita, are you packed and ready for vacation? Will you be visiting family or touring?

Ruby, yum yum my favorite desert..can smell it from here...

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Betty,

NO! I am NOT packed--haven't even made out a list of what to take yet--except in my mind! I tend to "thrive" on last minutes of doing this and that. I still have almost 2 weeks!

Believe me--I AM stressing out in my mind--but that is my normal pattern of what i do. Then--when crunch time comes--everything is done and everything is in order

We have family (cousins/husbands/grown children) several times 'removed"--but we have helped them along all through the hard times and during the then (still) Soviet occupation years and right after the whole "getting the FREEDOM back" times (1989-1991) when no one still had anything! They are all very near and dear to us--and we to them.

Our cousins' mother's father was deported to Siberia in those awful deportation years. That is OUR "Holocaust" that no one knows or talks about! It all happened in June 14th, 1944. Everyone only talks about the one with Hitler and the Jews.
Well--our cousin's mother (now 80 something) met a man there and married him. He was from the Ukrane--so our cousins are half Latvian and half Ukranian.
No one here can imagine the hardships all these people endured! BUT--survived!!!!!

I have only been "back" once--in 1994. My sisters have gone there almost every 3 years. I realize I am in for a "Culture Shock"!
The cousins have long ago reclaimed their Grandfather's property--which was NOT easy to do. They needed all kinds of documentation that it "really" belonged to their Grandfather! Anyway--it was an immense accomplishment that they were "awarded" ownership of an apartment on the 2nd floor of a Co-Op type Apartment building right in the center of Riga (the capital). It took them forever to get some resident "vermin" out of this apartment (some derelict Russian living there) but when they did--the place became, truly, theirs.

It was SOOO sadly in need of repairs and remodeling! We are talking over 50 years of neglect! They had No money! They all had small children to care for and provide for. Jobs were scarce. However--they made the best of it and, eventually moved in.
Years later--one of the two Sisters also purchased the 3rd floor and now it has been totally remodeled and totally up-to-date with everything....just like here. Both of them now have very decent apartments--but it has meant taking out a 30 year Mortgage on the properties to do so.
We will have the use of one of the two 3rd floor apartments while we are staying there. Of course--we will cover any expenses incurred while living there. And, as usual, we will leave them any cash we have left over when we leave.

They are the sweetest people! They will do anything for you! And--we for them!
So, Betty, we will be BOTH visiting family--and touring. We will also be fairly independent of them and have our own space (the apartment). It would be too much of an imposition to depend ONLY on them! Especially food-wise. I am happy to be on our own! Besides--they live just one floor below us!

The cousin I am talking about (and her husband) are the same ones who made the trip to Alaska in 2006 and I went there as well just to be with them--and my Sis! I know you remember the pictures I posted....My sister paid for everything for them. The flight--all the admission tickets--the flight over the Glaciers--the dinners out, etc.

I have taken the whole week off before I leave and will pack and do all kinds of other things to leave the house and garden in as orderly a fashion as I can. My daughter will stop by every other day and water everything. She is NOT a gardener--but I will be grateful for the watering.....

Sorry that this ended up being so long! Some of you will "skim" right through it----but some of you will read it and maybe, gain a deeper appreciation of the history and heritage all the oppressed people from the Baltics.
We ARE survivors! We ARE "hardened"! We ARE a proud People and have never asked for a free hand-out of anything since emigrating to the USA! NONE of us!

Betty--it is all your fault! I hope you read this all------There is so much more to know! Just Google Latvia or Estonia or Lithuania and read up on the sad History of these 3 small Baltic countries who have been under either German or Russian occupation for 800 years!

Hey! Just FYI......Our Capital--Riga- was established in 1201! Now--that is old! And--that is the "Old Part" of Riga that has now become the tourist mecca! All enclosed behind the massive, tall Medieval stone walls with narrow, cobblestone streets and old churches and castles......It is a really neat place to visit----if you ever want to get away from the "usual" touristy places....go see the Baltic Countries!

Gita

Victoria Harbour, ON

Gita I so enjoyed your post..off to google Latvia

Richmond, VA(Zone 7a)

Betty, Mom is doing fine - taking her meds and down to 3 cigs per day (tsk tsk!). her brother is visiting today and I am sure will not be happy that she didn't call him with her news - BUT, he and his DW do not own a cell phone! How ridiculous is that? Travelers in their mid 70s with no cell phone!! So they are just staying the night and heading back out tomorrow. Mom is glad it is only 1 night.

DH & I both agreed we would get 2 dogs so they could play and keep each other company. It was our biggest regret - not having a second dog for our old girl Hobbes. So we know the price we will be paying (in more ways then one!). My flowerbeds are fenced in but Murphy always finds something to get into. When he is outside, if the kids are in the pool and not paying attention to him, he grabs whatever he can - pool net, pool noodle, shoes, socks, you name it. Las week DD had my bag of salted sunflower seeds out there and he got the whole bag and ate them. We couldn't figure out why he got us up THREE times in the middle of the night until we saw the evidence in the back yard! He's a trip!

Well, got a little more work to do then heading home. Will try to check in later.

jeannine

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Jeannine that is so hard to deal with but thank God you love him or you'd have to kill him.
Maybe for the second pooch you may consider a full grown dog from a rescue, that you research the breed and can get one that you know is not dominant because the rescue knows if it likes cats or gets along w/other dogs etc. etc.

Well all my plants hate this heat, I hate summer. My plants will officially take a crap in the front where I don't have my nice microclimate, like in back where it looks great. The front was victim to a rabbit last night, my first casualty since the Milorganite fertilizer, but I put out more today. The evil vermin ate one of my recent tall, recently emerged plants that I have no clue what it was. It looked a little like Castor but I never checked it out once I saw it, and I hope it was, that would serve him right and he won't be back.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Jeannine, always nice though to have a brother to worry over you...do they have a distance to travel home? Maybe their children should get a cel for them for Christmas..omg, christmas..on the 25th we'll be on the downslide....keep quiet Betty right?

Well you must have mega energy to cope with yet another 'puppy'..lol..maybe they'll play together rather than Murphy just looking to see what he can get into

Gita, went on google and have been ready..lot's of tragedy in those little countries..will continue my history lesson tomorrow at work..

Just got home, must have had a storm because patio set is overturned..it's a heavy sucker so will have to wait till either Kyle and Noah drop in or I'll call Greg...see I'm learning..know it's too heavy for me...

Well I have a couple of envelop swaps that I've everything done except the final stages on a piece that is being included so think I just might do that tonight and see if I can get them mailed tomorrow..rather please with what I can put in an envelope..taxes my craft senses but I've done well...lol...even I am amazed...

Was able to purchase some corn on the cob so I'll have a treat and should be in bed by 9...

Hope everyone is ok..everyone, not just on this thread seem to be AOL...

Victoria Harbour, ON

Dawn as always you have me chuckling..just prior to reading the last part of your post I was thinking the same, do hope it's the castor bean plant...

No baby yet? Getting anxious and it's not even my 'grandaughter' lol..hope all is well...

Usually in August when we get the extreme heat they put a water band on and there is not watering, my gardens take a kicking then as well and I think of all that money gone to waste...let's hope this summer is different..

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

hi there, the puppies are sooo cute! I love puppy breath too!

well the baby is not here yet so they are going to induce on thursday which is your wednesday...

we are all on tender hooks

(Marion) Havana, FL(Zone 8b)

What beautiful dogs your sister has, Betty. Needless to say the puppies are adorable. When I see them this size I want another dog!! Can't have one here because of lake and the alligator. Would be cruel to keep it in the house all the time. Cats don't seem to care--just go from one sunny spot to sleep to the next one! Ah, such a life.

Hello everyone. Really tired tonight--no rain and the grass was really high--tough time mowing but it is done. Thank goodness!!

Glenview, IL

Betty,
those puppies are the absolute adorable!

...Everyone! I have received the most wonderful package today!

Thank You my Secret Pal!!..whoever you might be.

I am telling you...Someone is most talented with a wood engraver!
Look at the detail of my newly giftedf piece of art!

I am highly impressed and honored.THANK YOU.

Soo Cute not to mention the cutest gnombs!!

..OMG, Liz still not giving way! But look what she was "comissioned" to creating!
LOL...Hmmmm. Recognize that pendent?!

I'm freezing in here this morning, it's turned to cold, could probably have the furnace on..of course the windows were all open so I'm off to close them all, don't want the animals to freeze to death while I'm at work..

hello to all running late so off i go

Richmond, VA(Zone 7a)

So I have to tell you a secret..... we have a special guest coming to work today for big celebration event. I lucked out and got a ticket yesterday. I can't tell you who it is but I will give you a BIG hint: he's one of today's BEST NFL QBs! :) We won't be able to meet him or talk to him or even take pictures (bummer!) but to be in the same room with him and here him talk will be....priceless (another hint?)! My DS is very jealous!

Chat with you later.....

Victoria Harbour, ON

Carol, I'm freezing here in the office so have my trusted micro heater on..just missed the hail storm on 400 but Paul and the girls didn't..so heavy did they fall many size of golf balls that everyone were scrambling for side of the road, could not see for rain/wind/hail..mega damage to automobiles..

Yesterday afternoon the sun was shinning, blue sky and within minutes it was completely dark and storm blew in..and yes, I left the windows opened for fresh air and woke up seeing my breath as I breathed, well maybe not quite lol but it was sooo cold..

Will check Shar's thread..read some of it this morning of her trip from airport to Sweard..she'll have such stories to tell us..mixed bag of emotions..

Liz, sorry that DH did not catch the 'big'one but sounds as though he enjoyed his days away, now it will be shortly your vacation away, bet you are more excited to meet up with Judy than your hubby and his fishing...

Strange weather for sure, you'd have to have a heated pool to accommodate the changes in weather..Greg (DS) pool was 86 on Saturday, almost too hot..

Jeannine, looking forward to hearing all about your special guest, can't guess because I don't know any of the sport players..but am sure it's a great thrill to be having him there..too bad it wasn't bring your child to work day..son would have been thrilled..you'll be able totell him all about it...what is the special celebration? is it the anniversary of opening the company?
