Seguin, TX(Zone 8b)

Seriously...I don't have a thing to cook here and not a lot of talent either...can someone give me an idea of what to bring so I can get to the store this evening and get it?

Thanks!

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

I know that Janet and Connie are bringin 'paper goods' but I don't know what or how much of what. I'm thinking we may need cups and dessert plates. Or....since we're doing barbecue.....I don't think anyone is bringing pickles and onions.

How about pickles and onions? Does that help?

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

How about some crackers and cheese, Kim? We don't have any on the list, and my bunnies will thank you. :-)

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

Kim

Since it is so hot there could never be too much Gatorade or water.
It is easier for you to bring so far also. See you tomorrow.

Blessings,
Sandy ^8^

Seguin, TX(Zone 8b)

Ok....that is a nice variety of ideas. I'm off to the store to see what I can find.

Thanks!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I have pickles and onions..
no bread on the list, I'm not picky, Bubba might have a suggestion.
Utensils..yes...we need.

Seguin, TX(Zone 8b)

Well....I didn't know you had pickles and onions and cut up an onion just now...guess we'll have more than enough! Lol... I also picked up a loaf of bread, some goat cheese and crackers, and some gatorade. Oh, and some dessert plates.

To copy a famous TV show line - "Surprise! Surprise!"

The bison turned out to be short-ribs. They have cooked all night (and are yummy - BTW).

Looking forward to a great time will all.

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

I'm sure it will be delicious!

I'm running a little behind. Will be there by 12:30 and NOT bringing the tea. I can't fit the jug in my car! I'm planning on stopping and picking up some more drinks.

Hope ya'll are already having fun.

SE Houston (Hobby), TX(Zone 9a)

Randy,
So sorry I couldn't make it today. Had foot surgery yesterday and needed to keep my foot elevated all day long. I know ya'll had food overflowing from the kitchen, but I sure hate I couldn't join in the activities. And, I sure hate I missed my BROWNIES!!!! But, couldn't have made the walks and tours. Hope ya'll spent some money at Penzy's in my honor. Give everyone my regards!

Linda

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I surely had a good time today! It was great, and so very nice to see both Jungle Heights and Zone 9 Tropicals. Thanks to everyone for all the work and the delicious food! Speaking of that, some of you were kind enough to say my Cole slaw was good. So, here is the recipe. I got it from my sister in Beaumont who is both a great cook and a great gardener. It was already in digital format, so sending it was easy! There are many versions of this slaw, but this one is my favorite.

Best Slaw Salad (The Bishop's Slaw)

Recipe By :Bullard, Linda

Categories : Salads & Dressings

Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method
-------- ------------ --------------------------------
SALAD
1 package shredded cabbage*
4 green onions (use about 1/2 the tops too) -- chopped
1/2 cup almonds -- slivered
4 tablespoons sesame seeds
1 package Ramen chicken-flavored noodles -- crumbled
DRESSING
1/2 cup oil**
2 tablespoons sugar
3 tablespoons vinegar***
envelope of seasoning in Ramen noodles

*I use classic slaw mix. I have also shredded fresh cabbage myself (red and green) when I wanted an especially tasty salad.
**oil - I use any kind around, but I don't think olive oil would be good.
*** vinegar - any kind. I have used everyrthing from cleaning vinegar to balsamic and sherry.
Salad:
Combine slaw mix and onions and set aside.
Toast almonds and sesame seeds (separately) until brown in 350 degree oven.
Lou's note: In a toaster oven this doesn't take but a couple of minutes. WATCH CAREFULLY!!!
Crush noodles a bit; Mix toasted almonds and sesame seeds with noodles. Set aside.

Dressing: Shake ingredients well in a jar. When ready to serve, mix salad and dressing ingredients together. Don't do it earlier or it will get soggy. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

This is a recipe my sister gave me. I made a double batch today. I sometimes add a chopped bell pepper - any color. This has become a well-loved standard. It is sometimes known as The Bishop's Slaw as it was served to our bishop once when he visited our church.

This slaw i has been taken to a lot of foreign countries by various fans.

One time I bought some very fancy black sesame seeds to use. There were two problems with these - first, I couldn't tell when they were toasted! Had to throw in some white ones. Second, the black seeds looked like fly specs! Not doing that again.

We missed you, Linda. I sure hope your foot heals quickly. If I'd known you weren't coming, I'd've mailed you some brownies. :-)

Thanks for the recipe, Lou. The cole slaw was delicious!!

Thank you for the pictures, Janet and Connie. I wanted to be there so bad and now I have a feel for what a great group and good time was had by all. You two were not lost, you were led by divine providence to see that fence. Kewl.
