Why do my scarlet runner beans produce blooms but no beans?
Scarlet Runner Beans
Probably too hot. Runner beans don't like much heat. They like English type weather.
Well, if it's too hot now, they're surely not going to like July and August. Oh, well, the hummingbirds like the flowers, anyway!
Keep them well watered and mulch around the roots to help maintain some moisture, even grass/lawn cuttings will help if laid on top of the soil along the rows, you should try to water them at the same time each day or evening, in the evenings if watered, try to keep the water off the plants and only on the soil at the roots, the hummingbirds should be helping the pollination so dont give up just yet, zone 6 should still give you a crop but pick the beans when young, small and tender, dont strip the whole plant off at the one time, but enough to let the plants make some more new flowers for a longer period. these beans like plenty of organic matter under the soil before planting, a, to feed them and b, to help keep moisture/air at the roots. good luck. WeeNel.
I planted mine next to a wood post (square) and was wondering if they would attach to that pretty easy or if I should wrap some twine around it, or do you have any suggestions?
the post was already here and I was trying to put some color in that corner.
The leaves on my beans are all turning yellow and some of the leaves have these brown spots all over them. They are watered regularly and I planted them in miracle grow potting soil and they get lots of sun everyday. It hasnt been that hot here this year as we've had really wacky weather, any suggestions?
Hi Nanie, you will need to help attach the plants to the post for them to climb up, they will not manage this on their own, try lengths of string attached to the top of the post and a heavyish stone to hold it down at the bottom, then gently wind the plant stems around the strings, this may help, failing that, add some canes to lean against the post and tie the plants to the canes till they get enough tendrils to support themselves, good luck.
Hi Sydney, the yellowing on the leaves is either too cold, the miracle growing stuff is over rich or the plants are suffering from some form of deficiency, either water (try sticking your fingers into the soil to see just how dry it is after watering, if the soil has a dry crust on the top, then watering just lets the water go everywhere except to the roots, so you need to check this out, maybe the growing stuff you used was too rich for young plants, I use organic compost, home made added to the pits I dig for beans and peas, so it's hard to tell from your discription, maybe someone else can give you better advice for this type of growing medium, good luck anyway, WeeNel.
wooohooo WeeNell....I had already decided that if I tied canes to it, I wouldn't have to drag the ladder out of the basement to tie the post at the top.
plus I have several left over from staking my beans in the garden.
thanks for the advice =)

Sorry for my tardy reply. My plants are growing like crazy now as weve had lotsa sunny weather and heat as well, but dont see any signs of beans growing after the flowers drop. They've more than outgrown the six foot poles I used and the hummingbirds are enjoying them.
