Mixed Use Gardens - Flowers and Veggies together

Shepherdstown, WV

I was wondering, is it possible to mix flower gardens and vegetable gardens? As a plant, many vegetable plants are very attractive (and productive!), is there any reason the two are incompatible as long as one is careful about pesticides/herbicides and labeling (in case there is confusion about what is edible or not)?

Thanks

Quite possible lots of folks stick a vegetable or two in their flower beds.

I have flowers in my vegetable garden.

I ate my dahlia tubers last fall. Tasted similiar to Jerusalem artichokes.

I have flowers in my veggie garden also. Marigolds, nasturtiums, glads, annuals as well for some more color. I like lots of color! :)

Some flowers you want to plant with your veggies because they naturally deter pests that want to get at your veggies or naturally attract good critters that benefit your veggies. Others just look good in the veggie garden:)

I would try to stick with flowers that do not reseed. I planted calendula and orange poppies one year and I get them all over the garden.

Thanks!

I was thinking that there had to be a way to combine the two. I have room for both types of gardens, but I want to get as much use for the land as possible!

I have peppers and poppies together..I had already planted the poppies when I realized the place I had planned to put the peppers was too shady. I also have a tomato plant on that side of the house, well, just because.

We used to put marigolds EVERYWHERE in the gardens. My mother loved them, and we could get about 10 billion seeds per plant, so after we decided to start saving the seeds, we never bought them again. Marigolds are apparently a great deterrent for almost everything that might attack your garden - except potato bugs. Apparently potato bugs are immune to everything.

We also used to plant nastursims with the cucumbers because they apparently helped to chase away some of the cuke pests. Additionally, they were very tasty and pretty in salads. Kind of sour like sorrel (or rabbit grass as we used to call it). We also figured out how to save the seeds, so once we started doing so, we had more seeds than we knew what to do with and often gave them to our neighbors.

I grow Marigolds along side of my tomatoes.
