Bromeliads newbie

MIddle Blue, Indonesia

Hello.. I have bought my first Bromeliads. I've got the one which grow seeds (?).
I also have searched the Plant Files and got some plant that have similar appearance with it but not with the seeds.

Is it really a seeds? If the color are black, is that mean that the seeds are ripen and ready to sow or just a rooten seeds?

Is there any kind of special care to these seeds? Thank you

I don't know much about bromeliads, but those do appear to be seeds. I don't know whether they will grow or not, but why not try it? Nothing to lose.

Good luck,

I'm not an expert, but I've grown many bromeliads and I can tell you what I know about them:

They only flower once in their lifetimes.

After they flower, they'll produce a number of 'pups' before they die. You can separate the pups from the mother plant, and you have a new plant. I had one plant that produced 15 pups before it died.

I believe I read somewhere that you should let the pup grow to roughly one-third the size of the mother plant, before separating it.

The pineapple is the most famous of the bromeliads.

Hope this helps. There is a Bromeliads forum here on DG, where you can get a lot more informaton on them.

Thank you for the Information guys.. ^^

Is the things you called pups are the offspring between the leaf?

Yes, the pups look like a minature version of the mother plant. Can't miss 'em.

How many pups does the mature plant produce before they begin to die?
Sadly because I want to grow the big enought ^^

I think it depends on the plant. Like I said, I had one that grew 15 - other kinds didn't grow as many.

15?? Wow...
I think I must give it a try ^^

Thank you for the information.
I've sow the seeds in different media as a trial and error methods. Since the seed (pod) are not ripe in the same time, I have some time to prepare some rial activities ^^
