Powdery Mildew

Cape May, NJ

I pretty sure my zucchinni plants have powdery mildew. The plants are taking off but the leaves have a silvery coating around the veins. Any suggestions?

My squash has downy mildew right now and I have resorted to using Daconil, which is a very harsh poison. For powdery mildew check out the Safer brand products, particularly the sulfur based spray.

I forgot to even mention tackling the problems culturally. Powdery mildew and downy mildew like it when its cool and damp. Try to keep the leaves off the ground so they can dry after rains or heavy dew. When you water keep the leaves as dry as possible by not watering by sprinkling or spraying. Use drip irrigation or a watering can so you can water the soil around the plant and not the leaves. Keeping the plant dry goes a long way for prevention.

Thanks for the advice. I put in a soaker hose to help with watering and am trying a baking soda/dawn/water mixture sprayed on the leaves. If that doesn't work maybe I'll try a sulfur based spray. Could this spread to my nearby eggplant?

It can spread to other plants particularly if you touch and infected plant and then touch other plants. I have had it mostly affect cucumbers, squash, melons, etc. but I suppose it could affect any plant with a large broad leaf that is close to the ground.
