Are my blackberry bushes dead or alive?

I traded for some balckberry buches on DG and when they arrived the leaves were all dry and crumbly. The roots were wraped in wet paper towels and newspaper and in a plastic bag and still wet. I soaked them in water for a few hours, trimed the canes to 6 or 8 inches and then planted with peat moss mixed in the soil. It has been about two weeks and the canes look dead. Sould I be patient or dig them up and start over?

I just bought 3 canes of Boysenberry from eBay & 2 of them look like what you described. BUT, the 3rd one has a new cane emerging from the dirt, so I think all of them might be ok as long as the root system is.

How long did you have them in the ground before you saw the new cane start to emerge?

I think about a week-10days.
