Which type of Hardy Kiwi is it? I planted a Hardy Kiwi this spring and it is starting to leaf out and looks like its going to make it after all. I wasn't so sure when I planted it because all the leaves fell off and I, too, thought it was dead, but then a few weeks later, it started to leaf out. Maybe it loses its leaves due to transplant shock? My hardy Kiwi is an Artic Beauty called "September Sun".

The subject line of nic's posts tells you the kind of hardy kiwi - Issai is the variety and Actinidia arguta is the species (although Issai is reportedly a hybrid of two kiwis) Arctic Beauty kiwi's are Actinidia kilimokta and more hardy but less vigorous than argutas.

This is my first summer in my new house and believe it or not there is a really healthy Actinidia kolomikta (arctic beauty) in the yard. House is in longview wash. I would assume it is a female judging by the marble size buds or fruit starts? This is a new fruit tree/vine for me. I am Curious about the need for a male plant. There was one planted next to it, i found it only after heavy weeding. The male was dead as could be. Wondering if I should plant a new male or another female. I can get photos if anyone cares to see.

Hansen, I would wait to see the flowers to determine the gender of the vine you have, then get the appropriate one. Kolomikta's need some shelter from the hot sun until they get going.

Nicjw, Issai is somewhat delicate. I think it is a hybrid between an arguta and a kolomikta. It needs a little time and shelter to get going.
